Frenchman BOE approves Arizona trip for senior class

Fleming seniors will be on their way to Arizona next month for their final class trip. The Frenchman Board of Education approved their class trip during a meeting in mid-February.

According to information from Superintendent Steve McCracken, 10 of the 12 seniors at Fleming High School plan to attend the trip, slated for March 17-20 in Scottsdale, Ariz. with parent sponsors Harry and Lynette Harms and Mike and Kim Nolde. The group plans to go indoor skydiving, visit an escape room, go on a Segway tour and attend a spring training baseball game.

McCracken said the class has been raising funds since the seventh grade to assist with paying for the trip.

The February meeting opened with reports from administration as well as Christy Stumpf, sixth, seventh and eighth grade language arts teacher. She discussed what each class is involved in and explained her teaching using different writing techniques, styles and processes. Stumpf and Denise King, another language arts teacher at Fleming, use different opportunities for students to also be involved with public speaking.

Principal Stacy McDaniel gave board members an update on several competitions students have been a part of over the last few weeks, including academic and athletics. She said the Fleming Knowledge Bowl teams have participated in competitions in both Fleming and Akron and that three students took part in Honor Band at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

McDaniel also said Fleming Schools plans to host a motivational speaker for sixth through 12th grade students.

While approving the consent agenda, board members approved Levi Muller as a volunteer assistant wrestling coach as well as overnight travel for State wrestling two weekends ago. The Board also approved overnight trips or regional and State basketball, if necessary.

Throughout action items, the BOE voted to approve an invoice from ATI in the amount of $29,648. McCracken said the invoice covers the cost of reclamation of the wrestling room, which is located in one of the buildings in downtown Fleming. He said a water line broke and flooded the building and ATI brought in drying machines and a generator to help dry the building out.

The Board also approved the Library Agreement and the 2020-21 school district calendar. McCracken said the Library Agreement has not changed and is an agreement with the School, Town and Library Association. The Library Board reviewed the document and the School and the Town have both signed it for the year.

The Fleming School/Community Library is staffed by Sandy Kinzie, Fleming School Libarian, and Dana Melkelburg, The Town Libarian.

According to McCracken, there are no major changes to the District calendar from previous years.

The BOE also voted to extended Superintendent McCracken’s contract for the 2021-22 school year. He is now in his sixth year with Fleming Schools.

Before moving onto discussion items, board members agreed to purchase one-year certificates of deposit. The Superintendent explained that current CDs are purchased every 30 days. The District will now purchase 12-month CDs in order to increase interest rates.

Before adjourning, newer Board Member Carmen Vandenbark requested to see a working class schedule for the upcoming school year at the April meeting. She also discussed results of a staff survey that was conducted for the S-CAP review.
