THE ANNUAL Springfest, sponsored by the Haxtun Chamber of Commerce, attracted some 800 people Friday evening. People took in the free supper and then visited the many booths where they took in demonstrations and signed up for drawings as Gwen Holcomb does at a booth.

85 years ago - April 3, 1935

The Haxtun Harvest

Further assurances that Phillips County will have a new courthouse was given this week when the application for a $23,000 PWA grant was approved in Washington. The federal grant will be used in connection with the $27,000 which now lies in the courthouse building fund. The building will cost approximately $76,000.

Virginia the five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Kinzie, submitted to an operation for a ruptured appendix at a hospital in Sterling Sunday morning.

Edia Erica Julian Anderson, 76, died March 26, 1935. She was born in Hjertlanda Parish, Jonkopings Ian Smaland, Sweden, and was married to Anderson Johan Anderson on April 20, 1877, emigrating to the United States in the spring of 1889 and coming directly to Haxtun. She is survived by sons Charles, John, and Gust and their families of the Fairfield community.

The Vietnamese refugee family now living in Haxtun are the 11 family members; De Lam, his wife Mai, their infant daughter Lan, Mai's mother Muoi, De's grandmother Chon Truong, De's sister Von, De and Mai's children Yen, Quyen, Phong, Binh and Mia's brother Phat. The family has survived the obstacles well and now working with volunteers learning to speak the English language, the first step in finding jobs in the area.

Paoli News - Mr. and Mrs. Milton and small son have moved into the store building at Paoli. He is employed by the County.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Newman, Matt and Marla, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Neiman, Scott, Kristin and Eric, Mrs. Fred Kain all had lunch at the High Plains Restaurant in Holyoke on Friday.

Rockland News - Dorothy and Rosetta Phillips made a trip to Windsor Saturday. They visited at the Clayton Fetzer home and brought little David Grabowski home with them where he will visit in the home of his grandparents, Leon and Dorothy Fetzer.

Those who are having April wedding anniversaries were Chas and Jackie Reynolds, Don and Ida Mae Wisdom, Roy and Mildred Widom, Duane and Melanie Fetzer, they were all present at church Sunday.

Clarkville News - Jim and Shirley Pauli went to Haxtun Sunday afternoon to pick up their baby chicks which had arrived on Friday at the post office. Mr. and Mrs. Garry Hadeen and Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hadeen took care of them until Sunday. Postmaster Steib showed a lot of concern and helped hunt for "babysitters."

Hazel Chapman was snowed in at the Carroll Harding home from Thursday through Monday.

Fleming News - Tammy Schepler is at Ridge Home and Training School at Wheatridge where she is working toward her degree in Special Education. At the present Miss Schepler is working this quarter with the deaf and blind.

Lori, Jan and Dan and Brenda Weibers spent the time their folks were in Tennessee as house guest of their sister, Loretta, in Sterling with Barbara, Darlene and Arlene assisting in the care and entertainment of the four youngsters while their folks were gone.

Hopping for Easter Seals are Fleming preschoolers. Those hopping are Tanner Serrato, Trevor Chintala, Tyler Vandenbark, Jarrod Boener, Derek Whittington, Kelli Monheiser, Nicole Lousberg, Caleb Knowles and Delissa Miller. This event brought in nearly $264 for Easter Seals.

Pee-Wee Wrestlers continue to work out weekly in preparation for upcoming tournaments. There are 27 wrestlers out this year. They are Christopher Gonzales, Jake Roberts, Derek Lundgren, Dalton Hinde, Austin Engraff, Cole Roberts, Andrew Lightsey, Austin Geilert, Jacob Beu, Cole Fix, Cody Fix, Brant Davis, Garth Dreier, Luke Davis, Josh Larson, Dillon Fetzer, Dillon Engraff, Patrick Roberts, Garrett Beu, Austin Vandenbark, Jake Fonken, Ian Fonken, Matthew Gonzales, Colby Starkebaum, Jake Wolfe and Greg Ruenger.

Athletes from 1999-2000 Bulldogs boys' basketball teams were selected for recognition by the Lower Platte Activities Association. Senior Ross Edwards earned All-Conference honors, and sophomores Adam Wernsman and Mike Ensminger earned All-Conference Honorable Mention for their performances during the season. Edwards was also recognized by the Denver Post with an All-State Honorable Mention.

The Haxtun-Fleming Herald

The Haxtun Lions' Club and 9News partnered to host the annual health fair on Saturday, April 10. According to Lions' Club members Carl Wilcox, 330 people took advantage of this year's fair.

The Fleming girls' gold team competed at Stratton on Thursday, April 8. Two members of the Fleming's varsity team attended the event. Amber Schlenz shot 98 for the day Jena Monheiser shot 106.
