Strokes from Other Pens

Letter to the Editor

April 15, 2020

Unprecedented is a word being used a lot lately. We can’t think of one faction of our community that hasn’t been affected by this pandemic. Potentially, the group most devastated are our local businesses.

Since the Stay at Home order issued by our governor went into effect, many of our friends and neighbors have had to close their businesses, and/or stop practicing their chosen profession. Restaurants, retail shops, our workout facility and every one of our salon specialists have been affected. This has been devastating to many of them who count on their business income to make ends meet. In addition, will this financial hardship result in some of the businesses not reopening after all this is over? We are worried about what our business community will look like in the future.

Is there a way to help our friends and neighbors through this difficult time? The answer is yes! It’s called Help Haxtun. An account at the Points West Community Bank has been opened and is currently accepting monetary gifts. These funds will go directly to the businesses and employees most impacted by the mandated business closures.

Although all of us have had to adapt to the current situation, many of us have been able to continue working and earning our full pay. As early as this week, the CARES Act stimulus money will hit our accounts. We would encourage you to give part or all these funds to the business owners/employees.

What a wonderful way for Haxtun to Help Haxtun!

Help Haxtun Committee,

John Chapdelaine, Ross Edwards

and Jenn Molina-Oberle
