H. P. Groves, a resident of this community for more than 30 years, passed away at his home in Haxtun on Wednesday evening, July 3. Mr. Groves came to Colorado in 1902 and homesteaded 10 miles north of Haxtun. He was 59.
Curtis Arnold, son of Mrs. Roy Welch of this city, passed away at the family home last Friday at the age of 12 years. The little boy had seen failing health for some time and was stricken about eight months ago with a serious heart ailment, which caused his death.
Four persons were painfully injured in a fire and gasoline explosion Sunday morning at the Roy Welch home in south Haxtun. The victims, children of Mrs. Welch, were Mrs. Juanita Evans, Omaha, Nebr., Miss Mildred Arnold, Russell Arnold, 17 and Donald Arnold, 11. The accident was unusually tragic in the fact that members of the family were preparing to attend the funeral of their brother Curtis Arnold, 12, who died Friday. The fire was caused by a gasoline iron, which was being used by Mrs. Evans. She had been cleaning clothes with gasoline. Fumes from the clothing or from the gasoline iron were ignited, it is thought, causing an explosion and burst of flame. A bucket of gasoline on the floor was also set afire. Going to the aid of their sister, Miss Mildred and both boys were burned with the flaming gasoline.

Junk is junk is junk. Or at least it is unless you can sell it to someone who believes it is something more precious than junk. That is the principle behind the early success of Haxtun's newest business, J & J Junk. J & J Junk isn't necessarily going to put the two owners, Joe Woodside and Jerry Olds, into a rich man's mansion, but the shop located in the old Clark Chevrolet building in Haxtun, is attracting a lot of business.
A shortage of harvest crews has slowed harvest somewhat in the Haxtun area with farmers digging out old combines and trucks to get into the fields rather than wait for custom harvesters to arrive. Hot weather has dried the wheat and Everett McConnell, manager of Haxtun Farmers Co-op Elevator, noted that the wheat coming into the elevator is dry. Most of the wheat, he said, had 10 percent moisture.

One might say Wednesday, July 5, 2000 offered up the calm before the storm for Kenneth and Hazel Gordon. The storm, a tornado that came in from the northwest, before 9 p.m. The funnel cloud covered a three-quarter to a one-mile-wide area and wreaked havoc that stretched for nearly eight miles before it dissipated just south of Highway 6 one mile west of Dailey. Along the path, the storm laid to waste two homes, toppled a third and badly damaged a fourth. It moved buildings off their foundations then dropped them in heaps of rubble.

The Steeple of the Prairie Home Baptist Church was installed on Thursday, July 8 with the help of congregation members and mission volunteers. The Church has been under construction for the past several years and adding the steeple to the top of the building was an important piece to many congregation members. A crane from Landmark Construction was used to hoist the steeple up to the roof. The PHBC is located west of Haxtun on Highway 6.
