HHS moves to remote learning following three positive cases

September 9, 2020

A phone call to parents from Superintendent Darcy Garretson on Labor Day announced that all Haxtun High School students would be on remote learning until Sept. 16. The call said there have been three positive COVID-19 cases within the high school.

"Three students or staff member at Haxtun High School have been diagnosed with COVID-19," Garretson said in a letter to parents that followed the initial phone call. "Each case of COVID-19 is interviewed by public health."

As part of that investigation, each person diagnosed is being kept home from school until they are no longer infectious, the person's activities when they could have spread COVID-19 were assessed and those who were close contacts of those infected are instructed to stay home from school for 14 days after the exposure.

"Because it is impossible to assess all interactions in a school and because of the length of time which students spend together, either inside or outside of school, all cohort members, along either their teachers/sponsors, are considered close contacts," the letter states.

High school students in Haxtun have been asked to stay home until Thursday, Sept. 17. During this time, students should stay home and not go to other schools, activities, childcares or other activities around other people, according to direction from the school and local health department.

Haxtun High School students were instructed to check their school emails for information about picking up any school items needed for remote learning. Additionally, free lunch with contactless delivery will be available for quarantined students each day at 12:30 p.m.

For more information, contact Garretson at (970) 774-6111.
