Sept. 11, 1935

The Haxtun Harvest

Lon Jewell, retired farmer and residents of the Haxtun and Fairfield communities for a number of years, passed away at a hospital here Monday, morning, Sept. 9, 1935. He was 72 years of age. He was unmarried.

Donald Ramsay, Willis Marlatt and Bill McKellar left last Friday for Fort Collins where they will attend college during the coming term.

Impressive ceremonies to mark dedication of new courthouse: Construction of the new court house was begun last July and it is expected to be ready for occupancy by Jan. 1, 1936. The general contract for construction was awarded to Knutzen & Son of Kearney, Nebr. Details incident to the letting of contracts and drawing up of early plans were handled by the board of county commissioners, S.J. Meakins, Rudolph Ewegen, and Mrs. Emma S. Kramer, county clerk. Razing of the old courthouse building was supervisor buy the county commissioners. The work was done by FERA laborers.

Cheryl Meakins of Haxtun brought home grand champion honors from the Colorado State Fair for her home environments 4-H project. She entered a refinished antique chest to bring home the top honors.

Shelly Stansbury and Cheryl Meakins, participated in the 1980 REA Energy Seminar held last summer at Steamboat Springs, spoke to the General Business class in Haxtun High School on Friday. The girls gave a slide-presentation and told of their various experiences at the seminar. They told of the scarcity of natural resources and the needs to conserve energy.

Haxtun's population is now 1,008 according to the final unofficial population tally released by the United States Bureau of the Census. The survey shows that there are 481 housing units in the town.

Tim Grauberger of Fleming has been named to America's Outstanding Names and Faces. He received this award for his excellence in extracurricular and academic achievements. Only one percent of all American students receive this award. He is a senior at Fleming High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Grauberger.

Miss Kim Dobbins, bride-elect of Dennis Gretch was honored with a surprise bridal shower Saturday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Barbara Hobbs.

Paoli News - Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kain returned from Douglas, Wyoming on Thursday. They spent the Labor Day weekend at the Gledno Lake and at the home of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kain and family.

Mrs. Leland Miller and Mrs. Larry Groshans returned home on Labor Day from a trip to Miltan Freewater, Oregon, Ila Hahn and Corby Hahn returned with them.

Fairfield News - Linnea Duell is attending Oral Roberts University at Tulsa Oklahoma. Her parents took her to Tulsa two weeks ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jeffers and Mr. and Mrs. Brent Jeffers were among those that attending the Haxtun faculty and staff picnic at the park in Haxtun a week ago.

Clarksville and Wages News - The Buffalo Grass ladies hosted a bridal shower for Charlotte Day at the church Sunday afternoon. Among those attending were Betty Chapman, Barb and Twila Harding, Ardie Harding and girls, and Minnie Schmidt.

A baby shower for Kashawndra Pierce daughter of Pastor and Mrs. Don Pierce will be September 14 at 7:30 at the Buffalo Grass Church.

The Haxtun-Fleming Herald

Orth was honored during half-time at Friday night's football game against the Geneo-Hugo Pirates for 30 years of service to the Haxtun School District. Orth retired from his position as head of maintenance at the school at the end of August. During those years, and possibly longer, Orth has also kept game statistics for Bulldog football. A reception in Orth's honor was held at Haxtun Community Center following the game. The reception, hosted by the Haxtun Board of Education, was attended by a multitude of well wishes.

Grand Marshals Freda Barkley and Rich Lambert will lead the Fleming Fall Festival Parade on Saturday, Sept. 16. Both former Fleming residents now reside in nursing homes. This year's Parade theme is, "The small town with a big heart."

Gene and Marge Brown will serve as Honored Citizens at Fleming's 81st annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Austin Vandenbark, a 2010 Fleming High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in justice studies. Vandenbark, a son of Renee Cheramy, Fleming, plans to major in justice studies.

Bulldog defenders, Brandt Davis #22, and Brandon Hinde, #88, put the stop on the Cheylin, Kan. offense during the Sept. 10 game at Adam Wernsman Memorial Field.
