HAXTUN VOLUNTEER Firemen pictured (l-r), Wyatt Workman, DelRay Mayhew and Levi Davis left Haxtun Saturday afternoon to volunteer their services on the Front Range with the Cameron Peak Fire.

Three of Haxtun's volunteer firemen set out to help fight the Cameron Peak Fire, now dubbed the largest wildfire in Colorado's history. The Cameron Peak fire ignited on Aug. 13 in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National forests near Cameron Pass and Chambers Lake.

The fire is burning over rugged terrain and has caused numerous evacuations and closures as it's inched closer to Fort Collins and the surrounding areas. As of Monday morning, Oct. 19, the fire has covered more than 203,000 acres.

On Oct. 17, the Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department deployed three individuals and an engine to help battle the blaze. The three volunteer firemen, Wyatt Workman, DelRay Mayhew and Levi Davis, are set for a 72-hour deployment for the purpose of structure protection. The three took Haxtun engine 212 from the local department.

As of Monday morning, the fire is only 62 percent contained with more than 1,400 personnel fighting the fire. Fire crews continue to battle high winds in the fire area.

As the initial three finish up their first 72-hour deployment, it is likely the Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department will send another group to help with the fire.

"We are more than happy to send resources to help fellow Colorado firemen fight these fires," Haxtun Fire Chief Ron Carpenter said. "Departments from all over the State sent resources to help us in 2017 and we are happy to be able to pay it forward and do the same."

In addition to the Cameron Peak fire, Colorado firemen are also battling other fires in the area including the East Troublesome fire, Williams Fork fire, Lefthand fire and the Calwood fire.
