McCracken updates Frenchman BOE on complaint procedure

October 28, 2020

As the first nine weeks of school winds down, board members with the Frenchman School District in Fleming heard reports from several teachers as well as administration at their Oct. 20 meeting. The monthly meeting opened with staff reports followed by the same from Principal Kortney Firme and Superintendent Steve McCracken.

Fleming First Grade Teacher Danielle Wernsman spoke to the Board first. Each meeting, staff members rotate attending board meetings, giving board members an update on what is happening in their classroom. Wernsman is in her first year teaching first grade in Fleming and said that she is using a new program to progress monitor student performance. She gave the Board info about a recent trip to the pumpkin patch, happenings during homecoming week and talked about a recent Google classroom training that took place for staff members.

Deron Feather, Fleming PE Teacher, also presented to the Board in October. He talked about his goals for the program and the weight classes he teaches. Feather uses technology to track performance for students who are in his program.

As with teacher reports, each meeting features time for administration to give information to board members, beginning traditionally with Firme. She said homecoming week activities were a success and she is nearing the end of the completion of the first round of teacher evaluations.

During his time with the Board, McCracken gave an update on a new complaint procedure for Fleming Schools. He asked each board member to review it. In later follow up, McCracken said the District has established a written complaint process for students and parents to follow. To file a complaint, students and/or parents will fill out the form and return it with a detailed description of the situation. The process involves trying to get a resolution closest to the situation, McCracken said. From there, if need be, the complaint progresses to the principal, superintendent and finally the school board.

Following reports, board members approved the consent agenda before moving onto action items. When approving the consent agenda, the Board approved minutes from the September meeting, quarterly financial report and Alicea Einspahr as a bus driver.

As the first line of action items, board members approved the 2020-21 district accountability committee consisting of the following members: Secretary Kim Nolde, Kendyl Kirkwood, Auston Hoskins, Whitney Chintala, Nate Betley, President Jennifer Muller, Terri Serrato, Jolene Kirkwood, Jeannie Cochran, Samantha Nielsen, Dave Etl, Susan Sigmon, Christa Lousberg, Taylor Vandenbark, Desiree Johnson, Cindy Johnson, Vice President Lisa Chintala, Firme, Harry Harms, Randy Stahley and McCracken. The Fleming DAC meets one each nine weeks of the school year and is given a specific charge by the Board each year.

The Board also approved calendar changes to the 2020-21 calendar to accommodate the delay of the start of the school year in August. Now, students will go all day on Dec. 18 and May 21, days that were previously set as half days. There will also be school all day on April 1.

The next board meeting in Fleming is set for Tuesday, Nov. 17.
