Garretson announces plans to retire after 37 years with Haxtun Schools

January 27, 2021

After 37 years with the Haxtun School District, Superintendent Darcy Garretson announced her retirement at a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Garretson began her career in Haxtun in 1984 as the High School English Teacher.

“… Fresh out of Colorado State University, I had no idea how my career would unfold or that it would last for this many years in Haxtun,” Garretson said in her retirement letter to board members. “Haxtun Schools, and the surrounding community has become my home, provided me with invaluable relationships and opportunities, and allowed me to pursue my passion for helping students reach their potential.”

Garretson wore many hats throughout her career in Haxtun, but as Superintendent helped the District secure two bonds allowing for improvements totaling more than $10 million to the District. While under her direction, the District successfully completely remodeled the elementary building, added a middle school wing, created a new playground, upgraded the gym, replaced all the roofing and HVAC system as well as other essential projects to keep the building running efficiently.

“Over the years, I feel I have given back to both the school and community, working alongside many to make Haxtun Schools a safe, successful and productive place for students to excel. From the beginning, it has been impactful to have worked as part of a staff who has worked to differentiate instruction for all learners, accommodating different skill levels, motivational levels and varied interests. Haxtun Schools continues to draw students from neighboring districts and has a reputation for high-achieving graduates,” she said. “I am proud to have been part of the system Haxtun has created and maintained strong vocational student organizations, member in the state-wide Student Centered Accountability Project program, enthusiastic participation in the BOCES-wide professional development and our increased individualization for students to meet their needs.”

Garretson plans to retire at the end of the 2020-21 school year, with plans to continue employment through Oct. 1 to help facilitate a smooth transition.

“I truly appreciate the opportunity given to me by the Board and the community, serving both has been a long and satisfying career,” Garretson said.

While approving her retirement letter, board of education members agreed a three-month extension to Garretson’s contract to allow employment through Sept. 30, allowing time for Garretson to assist in the transition with a new superintendent. A following motion was approved to consult with the Colorado Association of School Boards to aide in the search of a replacement for Garretson’s position.

The motions to accept Garretson’s retirement and collaborate with CASB were followed by a 25-minute closed-door, executive session to discuss personnel matter, specifically the superintendent.

Board members also accepted a resignation letter from Joe Bivins during the January meeting. Bivins serves the district in outside maintenance and as a bus driver. His last day of employment is Jan. 29.

“I have accepted an offer from Budke Power Sports in Nebraska,” Bivins said in his resignation letter. “I would like to thank you for having the opportunity to work for the Haxtun School District the last nine-10 years.”

Bivins noted that he has kept a journal of his weekly activities for the person who fills his position.

Garretson said at this point, the District is not advertising to replace Bivins, but will put it out to staff that may be interested in mowing and painting beginning this spring. Administration is working on other plans to help find a replacement bus driver. The District is currently advertising for that position.

In other business the Board:

• Approved salary schedules to reflect the change in minimum wage that took place on Jan. 1.
