WILDCAT SENIOR Chris Goss goes up for a rebound in Haxtun last Saturday. The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season to the neighboring Bulldogs that night.

Season B, as dubbed by the Colorado High School Activities Association, finally got underway for the Wildcats of Fleming High School on Jan. 29. The school returned to extra curricular athletic activities following a gridiron 6-man Championship victory in early December.

The Wildcats opened with two away games on the basketball court; the first resulting in a win at the home of the Caliche Buffaloes and the second a loss at the home of the Haxtun Bulldogs.

Friday's season opener started off with the Buffs out in front, 14-11, after the opening quarter. Caliche expanded that lead by one in the second, taking a four-point lead by the end of the half, 34-30.

Fleming came back for a fight in the second half and narrowed Caliche's lead to one by the end of the third, 44-43. A fourth and final quarter was all the Wildcats needed to nab a win. After going up 20-14 in final-quarter scoring, the Wildcats took the lead and held it for the final-horn victory, 63-58.

Two Wildcats earned double-doubles for the night. Senior Kade Comstock led the Wildcats on the scoreboard with 20 points. He made good on six two-point field goals and went eight for 11 from the free-throw line.

Under the net, Comstock brought down 10 rebounds; one of those on offense and nine under the defensive board.

Sophomore Nolan Japp matched Comstock in boards with 10 split evenly at five offensive and five defensive. Those rebounds coupled with his 11 points gave him a double-double. He sunk two three-point shots, two shots for two and made one from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Braylen Feather tallied 15 on the scoreboard after putting down three three-point shots and going six for eight at the free-throw line.

Senior Chris Goss led the team under the net with 14 rebounds. He brought down eight offensive and six defensive boards.

Saturday night's contest took the Wildcats to Haxtun where they met up with the then 1-0 Bulldogs. Haxtun defeated Peetz the night prior by a 20-point deficit.

Haxtun held a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 12-7, and expanded that lead to 13 by the end of the half, 31-18.

Haxtun's offense continued to dominate after returning from the halftime intermission. They added another point to their advantage, outscoring the visiting Wildcats 19-13 in the third. The home team lead 50-31 heading into the final quarter.

Fourth quarter scoring between the two teams was the closest of the four quarters with Fleming trailing by just two, 16-14, and the game closed with Haxtun on top, 66-45.

Comstock earned his second consecutive double-double for the Wildcats. He tallied 14 points on the scoreboard for the night after knocking down one three-pointer, three two-point shots and five free throws.

Under the net, Comstock brought down the team-high 12 rebounds. He grabbed three offensive and nine defensive boards.

Feather followed Comstock in scoring with 10 points. He earned his by way of two three-point shots and two good two-point field goals. He also added six rebounds as did his sophomore classmate Harry Harms.

Sophomore Nolan Japp followed Comstock in boards with seven. He contributed five offensive rebounds as well as two defensive.

The Wildcats are scheduled to remain on the road for the next two games on their schedule. They'll head to Weldon Valley on Friday, Feb. 5 to face off with the Warriors who stood at 0-1 as of press time. The Warriors were set to take on the 0-2 Prairie Mustangs on Tuesday evening, Feb. 2.

On Saturday, Feb. 6, the Wildcats are scheduled to head to Genoa-Hugo. Genoa-Hugo/Karval held a 1-0 record as of press time with a win over Kiowa and a loss to Limon. They are on the books for a Thursday matchup with Wiley.

Tuesday, Feb. 9, marks Fleming's home opener. The Wildcats are scheduled to host the Merino Rams that night with contests beginning at 4 p.m.

Although current COVID-19 restrictions limit the number of spectators allowed at the games, the Wildcats' contests have been streamed live on Facebook. Fans can follow the team by liking their page at "Fleming Wildcats - Home Page" on Facebook.
