Feb. 12, 1936

Mercury drops to new low as winter rages during week. The temperature in this region dropped to 25 degrees below zero, the coldest weather to be recorded in six years. Except for one or two days of more moderate temperatures, the frigid wave has covered this territory for almost two weeks.

Charles Taylor of north of Haxtun purchased a new Plymouth four-door touring sedan Tuesday at the Jankovsky Bros. Agency.

Good Hope News - The Willing Workers Club met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Joe Foxhoven. They afternoon was devoted to tying a comforter and embroidering for the hostess. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Ellsworth Gibbs, Feb. 25.

Highland Center News - The Butte family visited with relatives at Paoli Sunday. Otto expected to join in the rabbit hunt contest between Paoli and Holyoke huntsmen, but the weather was too cold, so the hunt was postponed.

Dailey News - Most of the scholars are back in school after having the mumps.

Philorado News - A number of neighbors and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ruby met at their home for a farewell party Tuesday evening. They are moving to a farm south of Holyoke.

Deaths: Mrs. Frank Freemyer, 45, of the south country passed away Feb. 10, 1951. Lloyd Edward Brown, 46, Feb. 8, 1951. William Riley Brooks, 84, Feb. 10, 1951. Cal Griffen Edgar, 62, Feb. 7, 1951.

Mrs. George Jones Jr. entertained at a canasta party Monday evening. Her guests were Mrs. Verneda Biesemeier, Mrs. Chas Sanders, Mrs. Ray McConnell, Mrs. Ward Lindon, Mrs. Ed Jones, Mrs. Chas Rush and Mrs. Lloyd Adamson.

Dailey News - Mrs. Eleanor Bush and son and family were Sunday dinner guests in the Herman Papke home.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ahnstedt entertained at a dinner Sunday. Their guests were Mrs. Edward Shewe of Big Springs, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ahnstedt, Lawrence Ahnstedt, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Reyher and daughter Beverly, Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Bentson and Miss Lorraine Young.

Clarksville News - Mrs. Dale Ozman and son of Midland, Texas, are visiting at the Fran Lett home and the R.C. Ozman home in Holyoke. Mr. Ozman came to help her parents celebrate their silver wedding anniversary, which was Feb. 4.

Feb. 12, 1976

Joe Thomas, Fleming Wildcat wrestler, was voted outstanding wrestler during the 1976 Class A District 2 wrestling tournament. Thomas won the 126-pound division title.

Highland Center News - Among those registering for kindergarten Friday were Rhonda, Becky and Bertie Pfaltzgraff and Roberta Lindsey.

Kendra Kinzie, Fleming High School FBLA member, was chosen the District's Miss FBLA for 1976. She will compete for state honors when the State convention is held in the spring.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Earl Atkins, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Randy Brown and Denny Bledsoe went to Fort Collins Sunday to the John K. Bledsoe home to visit the Bledsoes and to see their son Mike, who was home on leave. He has been stationed at Pearl Harbor.

Wesley Garretson returned home Saturday afternoon from the Logan County Hospital where he had been a patient since Jan. 4. Mrs. Wesley Garretson had stayed with their son Earl and his family in Sterling during this time. Callers on Sunday afternoon to welcome him home were Mr. and Mrs. Alvy Garretson, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Garretson, Mrs. Elsie Giles, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Michael and Jeff, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Ricker and Mrs. Dorothy Ruch.

Feb. 14, 1991

Diana Hill, in Saudi Arabia: "They told us they could intercept them (scud missiles)," she says, "but we figured they would be intercepting them in the desert. We didn't know they would be intercepting them above our heads." The Hills, which include Diana, her husband Tony and two children, moved to Saudi Arabia in late 1989 when Tony took a two-year assignment at a bank in Riyadh.

Connie and Keisha Howard, twin daughters of Rev. Richard and Susan Howard, each earned Board of Regents Scholarships from Concordia College, Seward, Neb., for the fall semester of the 1991-1992 school year. Both of the girls are scheduled to graduate from Haxtun High School this May.

Commercial Club Auxiliary placed red, white and blue ribbons on each street light on Highways 6 and 59 last week to show support for American troops in the Gulf.

Obituary: Vera Lois (Hart) Larson, 76, Denver, Feb. 1, 1991.

Birth: Brian and Cindy Kipp, Haxtun, are parents of a baby girl, Whitney Pauline Kipp, born Feb. 6, 1991 at Rose Medical Center in Denver.

Haxtun Lions Club members served between eight and nine hundred persons at Saturday night's Chuckwagon dinner.

Haxtun residents are encouraged to attend the next Engage Haxtun meeting on Feb. 17 at the Haxtun Community Center from 6-8 p.m. It is open to all community members and plans are to recap the successes from the past two years as well as to reprioritize action items identified in the Community Revitalization Partnerships, held last April.

Thanks to a grant from Health and Human Services and the help of Northeast Colorado Regional EMS/Trauma Advisory Council and the Haxtun Ambulance Service, the Haxtun Community Center is now equipped with an automated external defibrillator.
