Search for superintendent prompts stakeholders meetings

February 17, 2021

The search is on for a new superintendent for Haxtun Schools. Superintendent Darcy Garretson announced her retirement in January after 37 years with the District. To aide in the search, Haxtun Schools have partnered with McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, an Executive Recruitment and Development team, to assist with the search.

Last week, representatives from McPherson and Jacobson were in Haxtun to host a number of stakeholder meetings, including those with staff and community members. Hopes are to take information gathered in the meetings back to the Board of Education and utilize it in the selection of candidates for the Board to interview.

Stakeholders were asked a series of four questions including information about the Haxtun community, positives regarding the school district, issues the new superintendent may face in the future and specific characteristics a new superintendent should possess.

Along with the stakeholder meetings, the District formed a community survey consisting of the same four questions. The survey was linked on the School website but was only available for six days.

Once the official application for the new superintendent position is posted, applicants will have until March 10 to submit applications to the Haxtun School District. Plans are for representatives to meet with the Board on March 23 to sift through applications to determine potential candidates for interview.

Once the three finalists have been selected, those names and resumes will be available as public record two weeks before a final vote by the board of education. Interviews are slated for April 8 and 9 with a final vote on April 13.

So far, the District has received four applicants for the position.

The superintendent contract runs from July 1 to July 1. Garretson’s contract has been extended through October to aide in the transition with the new superintendent.
