Feb. 26, 1936

A blacksmith shop will be opened in Haxtun this coming Saturday in the building nor of the cheese factory. The shop which will be known as Carl's Shop, will be operated by Carl Reker. Mr. Reker and his wife moved to Haxtun a few weeks ago from Sidney, Neb., where he formerly had been engaged in blacksmithing.

Nuptials were pronounced at nine o'clock last Sunday for Mrs. Evelyn Hayes and Mr. J.W. Meakins, both of Haxtun, at the Methodist parsonage in Sterling. The young people were quietly married in the presence of the following friends: Dr. and Mrs. J.H. McKnight, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Olson, Miss Louise Newbold and James Birrell. The young couple will make their home in the newly decorated and furnished apartment at the rear of the drugstore.

Dr. J.H. McKnight, Haxtun physician, opened offices in Sterling on Monday of this week and in the future will conduct a medical practice in that city. He intends to keep office hours here on two days each week. Dr. McKnight's sister, Dr. P.M. Lubchenco, with whom he has been associated during the last five year, will continue to practice medicine at Haxtun. She will continue to operate the McKnight hospital here.

Feb. 28, 1951

The Becker Furniture and Appliance store has been rearranged and redecorated during the past few weeks. A carload of new furniture has been added to the stock and Mr. Becker invites the people of the community to come in and see his display.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Munday and family of Alamos came last Thursday and spent the weekend in the homes of relatives. Mr. Munday was also in attendance at his closing-out sale of farm equipment. Mr. Munday and David are spending the week visiting with friends and relives in the community and also in Sterling. Mr. Munday and daughters returned to Alamosa Sunday afternoon. Mr. Mary Munday, who has spent the winter in the homes of relatives in Arizona and California, returned to her home last Thursday.


Mr. and Mrs. William Salvador and son and Miss Lorraine Young went to Denver Saturday and were overnight guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ramsey. Mrs. E.O. Bentson, who had been in Denver all week, accompanied them home Sunday evening.

Miss Phyllis Anderson visited Denver Saturday evening and Sunday with her sister Wilma Anderson and her brother Delbert and family.

Haxtun's 1976 FFA Chapter Sweetheart is Julie Hinde. She was crowned by last year's sweetheart, Judy Hinde. Also pictured are FFA president Brad Michael and attendants Terri Scott and Melanie Hofmeister.

FFA Chapter officers for 1976 are Jeff Franson, treasurer; Steve Smith, secretary; Kelly Hunt, vice president; Brad Michael, president; Ron Kurtzer, sentinel; and Melinda Miller, reporter.

Pledging to "do what I can to raise the level of honesty and candor in politics," Maynard K. Yost, 39, former mayor of Crook, announced his candidacy for the Colorado House of Representatives on the Republican ticket in the 65th District.

Dr. Robert Ridenour was named Haxtun's Citizen of the Year by the local Lion's Club at the annual Chuckwagon Dinner held Saturday. He is pictured with his wife Betty and their six daughters, Judy, June, Nancy, Barbara, Susan and Tammy. The doctor is credited with bringing approximately 600 babies into the world during his 25 years of practicing in Haxtun.


Member of Mrs. Larry McConnell's home ec class made their own t-shirts as their first sewing project.

Feb. 28, 1991

Bulldog fans come in all ages. Terri Dishman, age four, and younger sister, Kara, age nine months, root for the home team at districts held in Sterling last week. They are the daughters of Todd and Tonya Dishman.

Fleming artists of the month: Sarah Felzien and Molly Felzien are January's artists of the month. They are the daughters of Roger and Jane Felzien of Sterling.


Recently five Fleming students attended Colorado Close-Up. Mr. Bauder, Marvin Pemberton, Brenda Wiebers, Kristen Bauder, Tina Martin, and Kim Wisdom.

Bertie Pfaltzgraff of Haxtun will play the part of Baptista's servant and a haberdasher in McPherson College's play, Taming of the Schrew. She is also costume designer. She is the daughter of Roy and Kathy Pfaltzgraff, Haxtun.

Five community projects were identified as areas of high importance during an Engage Haxtun meeting last Thursday. Community members gathered to share success stories of projects already in the works and to pin point new areas of need from results of the Community Revitalization Partnership Assessment last April and from information gathered in previous Engage Haxtun meetings.

A disappointed Justin Stone stands atop the podium at the State Wrestling Tournament held at the Pepsi Center in Denver last weekend. Stone's opponent, Mike Lozano of Holly, was disqualified from the Championship match following an illegal throw that knocked Stone unconscious.

The Fleming Board of Education voted to extend Principal Dustin Seger's contract for an additional year during a meeting on Feb. 15. Extending Seger's contract was one of two action items on the agenda for the regular business meeting.
