I recently saw the profile and picture of the new officer with the Haxtun Police Department. A young fellow in his first police gig. I had to dig into my scrapbook to find the newspaper profile from 47 years ago of a 21-year-old me in a small burg with badge 001. There was no 002. In the photo it’s obvious my armament is a Smith & Wesson revolver with 12 spare cartridges in loops on the gun belt.

Today’s Glock guys with three spare mags might laugh, but there was a reloading technique where you could get six out the belt and into the gun almost as fast as a mag change. Besides, in police shoot...
