When he was young, Trevin Cardon made a pact with his brother to one day become a physician. He aspired to make a difference in his community through a career in healthcare. After years of dedication and nearly a decade of education, he held up his end of the deal — and so did his brother.

Dr. Cardon, DO, will bring his medical expertise to the Haxtun community as a family practice provider at Haxtun Health. He will be available for appointments about one weekend per month, mostly providing care to patients at the Haxtun Health Clinic. He will also be on-call for any emergency room and inpatient needs. His addition allows the healthcare organization to grow, now providing outpatient services to the community six days a week.

Dr. Cardon is excited and ready to begin working with patients in Haxtun and other surrounding communities.

“I love the relationship and community feel that rural medicine provides,” he said. “It is so fun to work in an environment where everyone knows and takes care of their neighbors. I also love the variety that rural medicine provides in that I can work in the outpatient clinic, ER and inpatient units all in the same day.”

Medical background and influence

Dr. Cardon graduated from Poudre High School in Fort Collins in 2005, then began his journey to becoming a doctor. He received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish translation with a minor in chemistry in 2012. From 2013 through 2018, he attended the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine-Midwestern University in Glendale, Ariz., where he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Cardon has teaching experience and has held several healthcare-related leadership roles, which correlates with his approach to patient care. With enough knowledge, he believes his patients can and should be empowered to make appropriate and informed decisions about their health.

“I see my role in patient care as an educator,” he said. “I approach each situation — each visit — as an opportunity to teach and inform. I also highly value the impact that strong relationships can have in health and approach patient care as a relationship with two parties making informed decisions together.”

Dr. Cardon was inspired to support rural communities by his father, a long-time professor at Colorado State University who taught and researched agriculture, particularly soil.

“I worked with him through high school and went on many trips all over the State, often to many small farming communities,” he said. “I saw how he was able to serve rural communities through the education he gained.”

Now, Dr. Cardon hopes to serve the rural communities of Colorado in his own way. He said Haxtun especially stood out, which is why he gravitated toward a role at Haxtun Health.

“As I was looking for rural opportunities, the community of Haxtun had a very ‘family’ feel,” he said. “I was very impressed by everyone I met when I made a visit to see the facilities.”

Born and raised in Fort Collins, Dr. Cardon has a heart for Colorado and he and his family love to get outdoors. He married his wife, Allison, nearly 12 years ago, and the couple has three children including Addie, 9, Maddox, 7, and Harper, 4.

Outside of work, Dr. Cardon enjoys hiking, camping, golfing and cycling, but these days, he spends most of his free time watching or coaching his children in sporting activities.

“I look forward to getting to know the community,” he concluded. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be a small part of the Haxtun community and am looking forward to making new relationships.”
