"Meat out" prompts recognition of local cattlemen

March 17, 2021

Saturday marks Phillips County Cattleman’s Day.

In response to Colorado Governor Jared Polis’s “meat out” proclamation, the Phillips County Commissioners adopted a resolution recognizing the many past and current contributions of Phillips County Cattlemen, proclaiming March 20 Phillips County Cattleman’s Day.

Governor Polis proclaimed a boycott of meat products in a “meat out” day in order to promote meatless diets as promoted by the Farm Animal Rights Movement to be observed by Coloradoans on March 20. However, many counties in Colorado have responded in support of an industry that accounts for nearly 10 percent of the State’s total export sales.

“Cattle and other livestock production has historically been, and continues to be, one of the key economic drivers in Phillips County,” the local resolution approved by the County Commissioners states. “Phillips County cattlemen and our ranching families are part of a $3.4 billion State industry with a $40 billion economic impact. Employment in the agriculture sector and related industries provides jobs to a great number of Phillips County citizens, a very large number of which are involved in ranching and livestock production.”

According to information from 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines, the United States Food and Drug Administration recognizes that a variety of animal and plant proteins are important to a healthy diet.

Phillips County is a declared Right to Farm county and has taken regulatory steps to protect active farms and ranches.

“The Commission expresses their concern that the Governor of Colorado would call for a boycott, even of one-day duration, of an industry that is key and essential to both our local and State economy,” the local resolution proclaims.

Additionally, the Commissioners added their support for Senate Bill 21-079 concerning deregulation of direct to customer meat sales in support of ranch to table private enterprise and all other legislative actions that support strengthening Colorado agriculture.

In support of the Meat In movement in northeast Colorado, Haxtun Super’s, in conjunction with Koberstein Farms, plans to host a free hamburger BBQ on March 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Haxtun Super’s.
