Haxtun's volleyball season came to a close following eight sets of play in Region 7 action in Briggsdale Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs earned a spot in regional volleyball action as the 18th seed in a 24-team bracket that whittled down to 22 before play even started due to cases of COVID-19. Cotopaxi and Springfield were eliminated from play late last week following the news of positive cases in each school.

Haxtun traveled to Briggsdale early Saturday morning for a first contest match up with the hometown Lady Falcons. The Lady Bulldogs fell in sets one and two, 25-22 and 25-20, but found their groove to take sets three and four, 27-25 and 25-22, to send the contest to five sets. In the final, Haxtun suffered a 15-7 loss.

Three Lady Bulldogs lead the team in kills in the first contest of the day including Allie Thompson with 16 kills, Taylor Schram with 14 and Cassidy Goddard, who put down 10. Goddard also led at the net in blocks with four assisted put backs against Briggsdale.

In the serving category, Kylee Workman, Goddard and Ella Coffin all served 100 percent against the Lady Falcons. Goddard registered a team high of 11 aces.

In the back row, Coffin tallied 41 passes on serve receive followed by K'lyn Bornhoft with 26 and Megan Walker with 16. On defense, Schram racked up 24 digs. Bornhoft tallied 14 followed by Thompson with 11 and Coffin with 10.

Setters Thompson and Schram combined for 46 of the teams 55 assists.

After a short break to re-group, the Lady Bulldogs took the court again, this time facing off with the Kit Carson Lady Wildcats. Haxtun fell in three, ending the team's season.

Thompson and Schram each put down eight kills in the team's final outing this year, combining for 16 of the teams 27 kills against Kit Carson. Coffin added four kills while Walker and Goddard each tallied three. Walker and Bella Tori each had one assisted block at the net.

On defense, Schram tallied 15 digs in the back row followed by Bornhoft with 13. Coffin led in the serve receive column with 21 passes. Bornhoft tallied 19 passes in the back row followed by Walker with 11.

"Our season did not go as we had hoped, but these girls worked hard and I am proud of each of them and how they handled everything they had to deal with this season," Head Coach Paige Thompson said at the conclusion of the season. "Out of all the 1A teams, our girls had the highest rated schedule. We played a lot of tough teams and while we didn't get as many wins as we would have liked, we had great competition that will make us stronger next season. We had two great senior teammates, Bella and Kylee will be missed."
