May 6, 1936

Friends of George A. Voges and Miss Anna M. Higdon learned this week of their marriage, which occurred Wednesday afternoon, April 15, at Brighton. The couple had kept the wedding a secret until a few days ago.

Mrs. L.B. Work celebrated her 75th birthday anniversary last Friday, May 1. A surprise party in her honor was given at her home in north Haxtun. The affair was arranged by Mrs. George C. Powell, Mrs. J.A. Work and Miss Hazel Hunt. Guests included Mesdames Tillie Fleming, S.C. Whitney, Ella Freemyer, Lottie Axelson, C.E. Olson, Mary E. Wood, and Bert Edwards.

Good Hope News - On Sunday, April 19, the children and families of Mr. John Rapp, who is making his home with his son, Frank Rapp, came to help him celebrate his 76th birthday anniversary, which was on Friday, April 17. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. John Gurdburg and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Elsam and family of Holyoke, Mr. and Mrs. Any Rapp of Holdredge, Neb., and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Rapp of Potter, Neb.

May 9, 1951

The Highline Electric Association, which is the rural electrification cooperative in northeastern Colorado, will in the near future erect a general office and warehouse building in Holyoke. The building, of brick construction, will cost approximately $100,000.

Mr. and Mrs. Ora Kinzie entertained at a dinner Sunday honoring the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Albert Kinzie Sr. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Gus Kinzie, Mr. and Mrs. John Flynn and daughter, Albert Kinzie and daughters, Mr. and Mr. Bud Kinzie and daughter, Mrs. Lillian Lippitt and LaVonne, Ronnie Egelhoff, Rex Lippitt, and Mrs. Frieda Lippitt of Pine Bluff, Wyo.

Fairfield News - Letters have been received by the Rickard Roos and Alvy Garretson families from their sons informing them that they have arrived safely in a Japanese harbor after a two-week voyage on the sea.

"An extreme apathy ... has been the reaction of the public toward the many bulletins we have sent out concerning the possibility of atomic attack on this country," said Dr. Richard Gerstell, consultant to the federal office of civilian defense. One suggestion: Venetian blinds are best window covering if a bomb should fall. They protect against flying debris and will also deflect a great part of the initial, scorching heat flash.

May 6, 1976

Kerry Naggatz, 14, Holyoke, became the second victim of the auto-motorcycle accident that claimed the life of his 16-year-old brother Delwin last week. A double funeral service for the boys was held on Tuesday, May 4, at the Holyoke High School gymnasium.

New National Honor inductees and this year's officers are pictured: Judy Hinde, Dave Kelly, Ron Liufau, Steve Sharpe, Doug Lick, Janelle Knott, Tony Ham, and Dan Clark. Jim Weimer is the society's sponsor.

Mr. and Mrs. John Brunner of Sterling have announced the marriage of their daughter, Debbie Marle Brunner of Sterling, to Michael Lynn Wolff of Haxtun, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Wolff of Haxtun. The April 3 ceremony was at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling. Rev. Robert Hehn officiated at the double-ring rites.

Don Hulse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hulse of Fleming, a 10th grader at Frenchman RE-3 High School, was awarded a bronze metal at the recent annual meeting of the Colorado-Wyoming Junior Academy of Science held at the University of Boulder. His science project presentation was entitled Characteristics and Properties of Infinite Sets. Walter Andre is his high school science instructor and Warren Magdanz is his math instructor.

Nora Hofmeister greets customers in her new office at 117 S. Colorado Avenue. Another main street store-front filled when Rural Insurance Service moved into the old C.J.'s Calico building last week. The company, owned by Steve and Nora Hofmeister and Kenny and Lynette Harms, handles mulitperil crop and crop hail insurance.

Election results for Haxtun Re-2J School Board: Tom Edwards, Kenneth Gueck, Lauren Heermann, and Caroline Newth. Results for Fleming's Frenchman Re-3 School Board election: Leo Brekel, Leonard Mari, and Robert Vandenbark.

Parking for motor homes at the Phillips County Fairgrounds is expanding this week. The PC Commissioners announced during a meeting last Friday the addition of 12 parking spaces, which will accommodate 24 more motor homes, RVs or trailers.

Members of Grainland Cooperative, with headquarters in Holyoke, voted last week to approve a merger with CHS Inc., a Fortune 100 energy, grains and foods company. The proposal passed with 67 percent approval and will become effective June 2011 pending appropriate due diligence by both organizations. Once finalized, management will begin planning for enhanced grain shuttle loading capabilities on the NKCR line.

Fleming Schools announced last week that two of their high school seniors have been named recipients of the Daniels Scholarship. Trevor Combs and Jena Monheiser were nominated for the highly competitive scholarship by Caren Padgett, Guidance Counselor and Dustin Seger, Principal.
