Fleming's para team receives BOCES award

The Frenchman Board of Education met for their regular May meeting at the conclusion of eighth grade promotion on Tuesday evening, May 18. During the hour and a half long meeting, board members heard from teachers Cheri Bornhoft and Trish Etl while also approving an increase to the classified salary schedule later in action items.

The May meeting in Fleming kicked off with staff reports, particularly with a report from Bornhoft, who is the Special Education teacher in Fleming. Bornhoft said the paraprofessionals at Fleming were recently recognized as the Northeast Board of Cooperative Educational Services Outstanding Special Education Para Team.

According to Superintendent Steve McCracken, each year the Northeast BOCES recognizes employees from their member schools who go above and beyond. Award recipients, he said, are nominated by others employed at member schools.

Bornhoft told the BOE that her program serves 28 students in Fleming, which is about 17 percent of the student population.

Fifth grade teacher, Trish Etl, also presented to the Board, noting that each year her class hosts the World’s Fair. Recently, each student selected a country and as part of the project, completed research and presented at the Fair, hosted in the gym for friends and family members.

To kick off action items, board members previewed the 2021-22 preliminary budget. While no action was taken, members did discuss the document and plan to give it final approval during the June meeting slated for the 22nd at 7 p.m.

Board members also reviewed and approved a supplemental budget for the fiscal year 202-21. McCracken said the approval of the supplemental budget aligns with current revenues and expenses.

“There is not a single item that drives this supplemental budget, multiple items are the reason,” he said.

The local BOE also approved the 2021-22 extra duty assignment schedule as well as the classified salary schedule for the coming year.

McCracken said notable changes on the extra duty assignment includes the recent resignation from Doug Kamery as head volleyball coach and Randy Kirkwood will also be coaching junior high boys’ basketball in addition to his role as the head girls’ basketball coach. Fleming is currently advertising for a new volleyball coach.

Additionally, McCracken said while approving the classified salary schedule, board members granted an increase for special education paraprofessionals to $17 per hour.

In other business:

• Approved a custodial agreement with Kenith Coffee, his first day was May 24;

• Discussed amending administrative regulation regarding out of district student admission. While no action was taken, board members did discuss adding the word “grandchildren” to the document, which would allow employees to bring their children and grandchildren to the district;

• Accepted a bid from Expert Electric for $8,650 to replace lights in the new gym;

• Approved a school calendar change for April 28 due to flooded roads;

• Approved a financial audit engagement letter.
