Strokes from Other Pens

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor,

My letter addresses several different angles about Memorial Day. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a service for the day this year. But this statement comes with some reservations. Our local Veterans have provided us with this service for years and many of them have done it for decades. If you have attended this event over the years it has fallen on a few to provide this for the community and many of them are not able to continue this tradition for their own health reasons. For me, this yearly service takes on a special meaning as I have an uncle that is buried in one of the many cemeteries in Europe.

To hear the name “Gilbert Seger — Overseas” read every year at the roll call of the departed, it has always given me a way to honor him and the sacrifice he made for the freedoms I have even though I can’t decorate his grave. But in all the years I have attended this service, I don’t think I have ever thanked our local Veterans for giving their time for this, not to mention Honor Guards at the many Veteran funerals and the many event that they provide the Color Guards for us to salute our glorious flag.

So even though I have a small reason for disappointment, I know want to say thank you to all of the Veterans not only for your time of service, but also for the time you take to provide the community with these special things. I hope there will be a way to continue the Memorial Day service, but I also understand the lack of people to provide for this. Please know that you are very much appreciated.

With all respect,

Lynn Seger, Haxtun
