HAXTUN FIRE CHIEF Dave Schafer sits behind the wheel of Haxtun's original fire truck. The truck, a 1937 one and a half ton, was purchase from Clark Chevrolet on April 6, 1937. It was retired in 1967 with a little over 11,000 miles accumulated.

Aug. 12, 1936

Whether or not old-age pensioners in Colorado will receive an increase in payments depends upon the action of the state welfare board, which meets in Denver the latter part of this week. Although Governor Johnson has instructed the 63 counties to pay the maximum of $30 per month to every person on the pension rolls, the county welfare directors are without authority to increase the payments without approval from the state headquarters. Walter L. Huey, county welfare director, said that 91 persons would receive pensions here in August. Twelve new applications have been approved and two pensioners have passed away.

Given the unanimous designation of the representative assembly at Holyoke Saturday afternoon, J.N. Skold will be the Republican candidate for the state legislature from the counties of Phillips and Sedgwick. He is a successful farmer living on the Sedgwick-Phillips county live and is widely acquainted through this territory.

Philorado News - Marvin Fuesz, Marguerite Suhl, Doris Jessen, and Wilbur and Edith Hohn left Monday morning for the Epworth League institute at Pine Crest.

Salesman Ace Goddard of the Clark garage delivered a new Chevrolet standard sport sedan to Lyle Scott last Thursday.

Aug. 15, 1951

A hailstorm struck an area north and east of Haxtun Friday afternoon, laying to waste nearly 2,000 acres of corn and feed crops and damaging many other fields to a lesser extent. Saturday morning hailstones were still in evidence along some roads east of town. Near the Beckman farm, ice pellets 18 inches high were banked for a few feet on the county road.

Miss Roberta Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson, became the bride of Eldoris Gizinski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gizinski, of Holyoke Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the St. Patrick's church in Holyoke.

Elmer Shafer Sr., a pioneer of Phillips County passed away at his home Tuesday after an illness of several weeks. Survivors: daughter Mrs. J.C. Legg of Haxtun, and sons Howard Shafer of Holyoke, John Shafer and Elmer Shafer of Bellflower, Calif.

Camp Tobin, an intregal part of the 4-H club activities at the Colorado State Fair Aug. 19.24 has been cancelled this year as a precautionary measure due to prevalence of polio outbreaks in the state.

Mrs. Rex Faules and infant daughter Regina Lee were dismissed from the hospital Tuesday. The baby was born Friday.

Aug. 12, 1976

A Fleming couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nelson Jr., are still listed among the missing in the wake of the Big Thompson Canyon flash flood on July 31. Their car was found last weekend with all luggage still packed in the trunk. The bodies of James Mares Jr., 33, and his five-year-old daughter Allyson, have been recovered and identified. Still missing and presumed lost are the wife and mother, Renee, 32, nine-year-old Jamie, and six-year-old Ricky.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barkley had a bridge luncheon Friday with guests Mrs. Chas W.T. Atkinson, Mrs. Raymond Rudel and her daughter-in-law Mrs. Gordon Rudel of Estes Park, Mrs. Les Mergleman, Mrs. Ted Yount, Mrs. Doris Bell and Mrs. Don Morison.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Williamson went to Sweat City, Iowa last week to attend the wedding that united their son Jerry in marriage to Miss Debby Guinn on July 31. They moved Sunday to their home in Greeley where he is a student of commercial art. He is also wanting to teach.

Phillips County Fair winner Melinda Miller, winner of the championship for breeding flock; Dennis Holcomb, reserve champion dairy animal and senior dairy showman; Troy Whitmore, grand champion market lamb; Mindy Hunt, grand champion boar.

Aug. 15, 1991

Chase and Viola Meakins celebrate 71 years of marriage. On Aug. 6, 1920, 18-year-old pitched wheat to his uncle Herb's threshing machine and later collected his pay. The next morning he and Viola loaded up in a 1919 Dodge Coupe and headed for Fort Morgan, where they were married at the Morgan County Courthouse. They had $47.50.

Retired college instructor and local author Jerry W. Spoon passed away on Aug. 7, 1991, at University Hospital in Denver at the age of 68.

Melinda and David Thomas of Danville, Ill., announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, Carrie Louise, born on Aug. 3, 1991. Alan and Cindy Hoal of Sterling announce the birth of their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth on July 27, 1991.

Haxtun Locker Plant players who took first place in the co-rec softball tournament were Debbie Fetzer, Denise Robeson, Denise Hill, Margo Kroeger, Colleen Lockwood, Jim Rifenbark, Hod Boltjes, Bryan Kroeger, Rick Lockwood and Roger Fetzer. First place members of the HBF softball team are Denise King, Dana Harris, Sandy Ham, Gina Weingardt, Becky Heniz, Brian Ham, John King, Jay Harris, Dan Weingardt, Brian Biesemeier, John Davis, and Jim Etl.

Dr. Joe Spurlock joined the Haxtun Family Medicine Center team last week, officially seeing his first patient on Tuesday, Aug. 16. He begins his practice at Haxtun with 13 years of rural health care experience.

It's been a long time coming, several years in fact. But thanks to late night work sessions filling out paperwork and grant applications as well as hours spent raising funds and studying regulations, the Haxtun Community Childcare Center has a tentative date for opening - Tuesday, Sept. 6. The open date is tentative pending final inspection by the State.
