Aug. 19, 1936

Frank Sullivan, well-known farmer living south of Haxtun, was drowned at Scottsbluff, Nebr., Wednesday evening. It was understood that he was swimming the Platte River there. He was 28 years of age.

Dan Edmund Hofmeister of Haxtun received the master of arts degree at Colorado State College of Education in Greeley last Saturday, Aug. 15. The class of 306 was the largest on record in the nearly 50 years of history of Colorado's professional teacher-training institution.

The object of an auto pilgrimage to Arriba, Colo., is to study the chisel-damming machine and method of farming which has enabled Mr. Charles T. Peacosk to average 18 bushels of wheat during the past years of dust and drought, including 1936. The machine makes deep furrows 20 inches apart and builds over one million small dams per section of land during each tilling operation. All moisture is trapped where it falls.

Having purchased Monty's Drug Store at Haxtun, the firm will be known in the future as the Gallbreath Drug Co.

Good Hope News - The Jolly Neighbors Club met with Mrs. Arthur Eckman Thursday of last week. Mr. Will Fuesz demonstrated articles mad of sugar sacks.

70 Years Ago

Aug. 22, 1951

Coral F. Gordon, principal of the Haxtun grade school, was granted a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Colorado State College of Education, Greeley, at summer commencement exercises Aug. 16. Degrees numbering 478 were conferred.

Wilbur and Willis Riley and George M. Jones left Friday for Seattle, Wash. Willis, sho is with the armed forces, was on furlough from Fort Jackson, S.C., and was to report to Seattle from here.

Home building can continue in the Haxtun community without interruption as a result of recent rulings by defense agencies in Washington. The new regulations insure a minimum but adequate supply of critical materials for use in new housing.

Mr. and Mrs. Shelton Smith and family and their guests, Mrs. Elza Smith of Leon, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. George Martz and daughter of Los Angeles spent the weekend in the mountains and Denver.

Mr. and Mrs. Milton Johnson of East Patterson, N.J., are the parents of a baby girl born July 30. She has been named Margaret. Mr. Johnson is a former Haxtun boy and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Johnson, who now reside in Sterling.

Aug. 19, 1976

Frederick L. Hill, a former Californian, began duties with the Haxtun police force on Aug. 3.

Memorial services for Mr. and Mrs. William I. Nelson Jr. were conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Assembly of God Church in Fleming. They were victims of the Big Thomspon flood on Saturday, July 31. Mrs. Nelson's body is still missing.

Four generations gathered in the Julia Bauer home in Haxtun. Mrs. John (Marceline) Fry Jr. of Papillion, Nebr., Julia Bauer holding Jamie Lynn Ohm, 3-month-old daughter of Mrs. Chuck (Linda) Ohm of Omaha, Nebr.

The Berean Fundamental Church at Haxtun was the setting for the June 19 wedding uniting of Joanie Koch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merl Koch of Haxtun, and Mark Groshans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Groshans of Holyoke. The Rev. John Regier officiated a the double-ring ceremony at seven o'clock in the evening,

Mr. and Mrs. Jay B. Jermigan of Aurora are the parents of a baby boy born Aug. 15. He was named Jason Dean. He is the first grandchild for Mr. and Mrs. Dean Garrett of Haxtun and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jermigan of Denver. Jason's great-grandmother is Olive Thrasher of the Haxtun Nursing Home.

Aug. 22, 1991

Roger Piwowarski replaces Daniel Geary as director of special education at Northeast Board of Cooperating Educational Services.

Obituaries: Letha Mae Buckman, 66, Aug. 16, 1991 at the Haxtun Nursing Home; LaVern Wolff, 62, Sidney, Neb., Aug. 16, 1991.

Al Renzelman received a silver-plated bowl on a plaque for his contributions to vocational education when he was inducted into the Colorado Vocational Association's Hall of Fame on Aug. 14.

Zack Henry, grandson of Bob and Sally Henry of Haxtun and Marilyn Denney of Holyoke, is pictured with his "big" trophy, won in the baby-bull riding event at the Yuma County Fair on Aug. 7. For Zack, the son of Brian Henry and Lana Henry, both of Yuma, this represented his first time ever to enter competition at the fair.

Staff changes announced by Haxtun schools: Anne Scheel replaces Linda Free as multi-categorical special education instructor at the Haxtun school. Mike Conner, steps into the head football coach position left by Brent Jeffers. Replacing Nancy Romine as kindergarten teacher is Jeni Koch. Maxine Hadeen has been replaced by Lori Lundgren as high school library aide. Lundgren also serves as cafeteria aide. Debbie Wolff, who served as kindergarten aide last year, was hired as elementary and office aide.

Doctor Lila Statz submitted a letter to the Haxtun Hospital District on Friday, Aug. 18 announcing her decision to not renew her employee contract.

Joe Boerner took over the math program at Haxtun High School this week as students headed back to class on Monday, Aug. 22
