Phillips County youth bring home honors from Colorado State Fair

BROOKLYN PLUMB, Haxtun High School senior, shows her Spot, Wanda, at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo. The two earned Reserve Champion Spot Market Hog and also first place in Class 1 of Spots. Additionally, Plumb showed a gilt, which received first place in Class 2 of Medium Weight Crossbreds. Plumb's showing at the State Fair qualified her for the Junior Livestock Sale.

Local 4-H members recently competed at the Colorado State Fair held in Pueblo Aug. 27-Sept. 6. The following is a list of both general project and livestock placings from the State Fair:

Market hogs: Brooklyn Plumb: Reserve Champion Spot Market Hog, first in Class 1 of Spots, first in Class 2 of Medium Weight Crossbreds, State sale qualifier.

Market poultry: Isaiah Rueter, third in Pen of 3, Meat Chickens, sixth in Roaster Single, second Hen Turkey, third Hen Turkey, first Best Tom Turkey, third Overall Market Turkey.

Market goats: Lucinda Mares, fourth in Class 3 of Medium Weights, State sale qualifier; Jaelynn Miner, 13th in class.

Market Lambs: Lucinda Mares, 11th in Class 1 of Heavy Weight Market Lambs.

Market Beef: Colby Weber, first in Class 4 of Market Steers, State sale qualifier; Cruse Weber, fifth in Class 5 of Market Steers; Tenley Becker, second in Class 8 of Market Steers.

Cake decorating: Holley Ely, Unit 2, junior, seventh place; Hailey Clapper, Unit 3, intermediate, 10th place.

Clothing construction: Keirah Nelson, Beginning Clothing, Steam 1, junior, 1st place, champion.

Electric: Juan Albino Nunez III, Magic of Electricity, junior, first place, champion.

Foods and nutrition: Jessica Owens, Cooking 301, Unit 3, yeast rolls, senior, second, reserve champion.

Global citizenship: Aly Lock, Study of Another Country, senior, third.

Heritage arts: Margaret Kleve, Quilting Unit 1, intermediate, first, champion; Aubrey Bieber, Quilting Unit 2, junior, second, reserve champion; Eleanor Kleve, Quilting Unit 2, intermediate, seventh; Leah Struckmeyer, Quilting Unit 3, senior, sixth.
