Lady Bulldogs knock off Rams; move up in State RPI standings

Two more wins, including a sweep over the Merino Lady Rams, gives the Lady Bulldogs an 86 percent winning percentage and a third place ranking in Colorado Preps 1A volleyball action.

Haxtun beat Yuma on the road last Tuesday and later took down the Lady Rams in front of sea of red in black at home on Friday night. Haxtun sits in the number three slot just behind number one Briggsdale and number two Wiley in State standings. As of Tuesday morning, the Lady Bulldogs hold an RPI rating of .647; just .036 behind the top-ranked Lady Falcons from Briggsdale.

RPI, or ratings percentage index, is Colorado High School Activities Association's way to measure a team's strength relative to other teams, based largely on the strength of their schedules. The formula uses the teams winning percentage, their opponents' winning percentage and their opponents' opponents winning percentage to determine rankings, particularly for post-season rankings.

Heading into Friday night's match up with Merino, several ranking organizations listed the Lady Rams in the number one seed, however, rankings didn't play into the mind of the Lady Bulldogs as they came out focused, on fire and ready to fight. Haxtun took down Merino 25-15 in set one and rolled to a three-set sweep, taking sets two and three, 25-18 and 25-20, respectively.

Two Lady Bulldogs hit double-digits in the kill column, led by the dynamic duo of seniors Allie Thompson and Taylor Schram. Schram put down 13 of 31 kill attempts with just two errors on the night for a .323 hitting percentage. Thompson added 12 kills off 39 assists with just six errors. Thompson earned a .154 hitting percentage against the Lady Rams. Cassidy Goddard registered eight kills in the three-set victory followed by Bobbi Starkebaum and Ella Coffin, each with four.

Thompson also led at the net in blocks with five. Starkebaum denied four Ram kill attempts followed by Goddard, Schram and Coffin, all with two blocks a piece.

Senior K'lyn Bornhoft had an impressive showing behind the service line. She earned three aces from 12 trips to the line. Thompson served 100 percent on the night, adding one serving ace. Schram also tallied one ace against the Lady Rams.

Schram, a senior leader on the team, racked up 15 assists in the contest, giving her a career total of 1,008. Thompson also tallied 15 assists on the night.

On serve receive, back row specialist Bornhoft registered 20 successful passes defense followed by Schram and Coffin, each with seven. Defensively, the Lady Bulldogs racked up 65 passes in the back row led by Coffin with 15, Schram with 13 and Bornhoft with 12.

Earlier in the week, Haxtun knocked off 2A Yuma on the road with a three-set win, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-21.

As a team, Haxtun put 48 kills on the floor led by Schram and Goddard, each with 15. Goddard put down 15 of 19 attempts with just two errors for a .684 hitting percentage on the night. Schram nailed 15 of 30, with five errors, for a .333 hitting percent. Thompson trailed with 12 kills against Yuma. At the net, Coffin led in blocks, with six, followed by Goddard with five and Thompson, Schram and Megan Walker, each with two.

The Lady Bulldogs served 90.4 percent from behind the service line as a team. Goddard served up five aces out of her 16 serves on the night. Thompson and Bornhoft each registered one ace.

Setters Thompson and Schram combined for a total of 35 of the teams 43 assists against Yuma. Schram put up 21 assists followed by Thompson with 14.

Senior libero Bornhoft registered 13 passes on serve receive and led the Lady Bulldogs in digs with 12.

This week, Haxtun was set to host the Fleming Lady Wildcats in a home contest on Tuesday night. Results of that contest were not available as of press time. Fleming entered the contest with an 11-2 record and a fifth place standing in RPI ratings.

On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to take on the County Cougars in volleyball action on the court in Ovid. The Lady Cougars are 13-1 overall and 4-0 in league play, according to Maxpreps. The two teams met up in mid-August where they Lady Cougars came out on top after a 3-1 victory in best-of-three tournament play.
