Lady Wildcats go 1-1 last week; take 5-set rematch over Briggsdale on Friday

A competitive week on the volleyball court saw a 1-1 finish for the Fleming Lady Wildcats. The local ladies in green opened with a contest on Haxtun's court where they fell 3-0 to the Lady Bulldogs last Tuesday, before hosting a victorious re-match over the top-ranked Briggsdale Lady Falcons on Friday.

The Lady Wildcats played tight sets with the neighboring Haxtun Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday despite the three-set loss. Game one went to 29-27 before it closed with Haxtun on top. Fleming fell by four and three points in sets two and three at 25-21 and 25-22, respectively.

Junior Lexi Schaefer led Fleming's back row efforts against the tough Haxtun offense. She put up 23 digs in the contest and received 32 serves with three errors. Schaefer also put up top numbers from behind the serving line. She went 100 percent on 11 attempts with an ace.

Senior Whitney Chintala followed on serve receive with 21 ups. She put 13 kills on the floor while assisting with 13 sets from the front row and went 100 percent on 12 serves.

Junior Kally Kirkwood led at the net with 15 kills. She also put up top numbers from the setter's position with 19 assists. Defensively she earned two solo and one assisted blocks.

Junior Maddy Harms led the Lady Wildcats in blocks with four; one solo and three assisted.

Senior Sam Pope made good on 13 attempts from behind the serving line. She tallied one ace for the night.

On Friday night, the Lady Wildcats hosted their top league competitor - the Briggsdale Lady Falcons. Fleming met Briggsdale earlier in the season and suffered a 3-0 loss on the Lady Falcons' home court.

Individual stats and scores by set were not available for the most recent match against the Briggsdale Lady Falcons. Fleming took the match 3-2 according to MaxPreps.

The Lady Wildcats remain behind Briggsdale in league standings. The two teams hold identical league records at 5-1; Briggsdale sits at 13-3 overall compared to Fleming's 12-3 overall record. Fleming falls short percentage-wise by .012 points.

The Colorado High School Activities Association lists the Lady Wildcats in the number five spot in 1A volleyball. Briggsdale holds the top spot with Wiley, Merino and Haxtun holding spots two through four. The first through fifth ranked teams are separated by .042 percentage points.

This week provides another highly-anticipated match as the Lady Wildcats host the Sedgwick County Lady Cougars. The Lady Cougars faced off with Haxtun last week taking the match 3-1. The Lady Cougars are set to meet up with the Lady Wildcats on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

Friday's agenda brings the Prairie Lady Mustangs to Fleming. Prairie enters the week at 0-6 on the year with a contest against Merino before facing off with Fleming. Friday, Oct. 12 matches between the Lady Wildcats and Lady Mustangs are set to begin at 4 p.m.
