November 10, 2021
Haxtun Schools' high school and junior high robotics teams competed at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling on Saturday, Nov. 6. Both teams qualified for finals in the competition; the high school went on to earn a top, first-place finish and the junior high team came in fourth place. The first-place finish qualifies the high school team for the Regional competition in December.
Robotics teams are tasked with creating their own robot out of provided materials to represent the them, "Demo Daze." Teams are scored on various categories such as the types of materials used and how the robot is able to sort through trash and recyclables all without knocking down trees and light stands.
Additionally, students are required to submit an engineer's notebook that describes brainstorming procedures along with strategy and struggles in addition to a research paper about the theme and how technology is used in our area to clean up demo sites.
At the most recent competition, area robotics teams competed in 13 rounds, each three minutes long. The top two teams from Saturday's competition at NJC, including Haxtun High School's first-place team, will advance to Regionals on Dec. 11-12 at Metro State University in Denver. Top teams from Regionals advance to Nationals.
The local high school team is coached by high school math and science teachers Meghan Lowe and Stan Kennedy, the junior high team is coached by junior high math teacher Michele Bivins.
