The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs kicked off the 2021-22 basketball season with match ups against two of the four top-ranked teams in Colorado 1A preseason rankings. Preseason rankings put the Lady Bulldogs in the seventh seed.

Haxtun kicked off the basketball season with an away contest in Fleming against the third ranked Lady Wildcats. Both teams matched up well in the first quarter, Fleming outlasting the Lady Bulldogs by just one, 11-12. The second was much the same, Haxtun adding 13 points to the board while Fleming added 16 to hold onto an advantage at halftime. A huge third quarter by from the Lady Bulldogs changed things around as Haxtun held the home team to just six points while putting 14 points on the board to claim a lead. However, the fourth would see a swap in the other direction as the Lady Wildcats went on to add 13 points while holding the Lady Bulldogs to five points on offense. As it came down to the wire, Fleming ladies nailed crucial free throws to take the win, 47-43.

According to stats provided on Maxpreps, senior Allie Thompson led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points in the season opener. She connected with five of six field goals while also sinking three of four shots from the free-throw line. Freshman Bobbi Starkebaum added eight points followed by K'lyn Bornhoft and Taylor Schram, each with seven.

As a team, the Lady Bulldogs made nine of 14 free throws in the contest to go 64 percent overall from the charity line.

Under the basket, sophomore Cassidy Goddard nabbed 11 rebounds; two on offense and nine on defense. Thompson and Starkebaum each brought down seven and Schram grabbed six.

Schram led in steals, with three, and also contributed five assists on the night.

The following night, Haxtun hosted their home opener against the Lady Rams from Merino. Pre-season rankings put the Lady Rams at number four.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped to a two-point lead after a quarter of play, out scoring the Lady Rams 8-6 in the first. Merino managed three more than the home team in the second, putting 12 points on the board to Haxtun's nine, giving the Lady Rams an advantage at the half.

After the break, Merino came out hot adding 17 points on their side of the board while the Lady Bulldogs added another nine. Defensively, Haxtun had an outstanding fourth quarter, allowing their opponent just two points while adding 10 points on the other side of the ball. Despite a stellar fourth quarter showing, the Rams nudged away with a 37-36 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

Due to technical difficulties with streaming devices and computer technology, stats for the Merino game were not available as of press time.

LADY BULLDOG #14 Bobbi Starkebaum puts up a jump shot in Haxtun's season opener on Friday night as Fleming's #24 Madi Serrato looks for a stop from behind. Starkebaum registered eight points in Friday's contest. She also brought down four offensive rebounds and three defensive for a total of seven.

"Our first weekend of the season of basketball was very competitive," Head Coach Arlan Scholl said. "We were matched up against the third and fourth preseason ranked Fleming Wildcats and Merino Rams. The girls played hard and we won in most every measurable category except the final score in each game. As usual, the girls played hard and competed to the very end, but a few missed shots here and there and a few missed free throws caused us to come up short of the wins."

This week the Lady Bulldogs are focusing on upcoming match ups with Sedgwick County and Caliche. On Friday, the team is set to travel to the home of the 0-1 Lady Cougars. Sedgwick County opened their season last weekend against Briggsdale.

On Saturday, Haxtun will host the Lady Buffs of Caliche. According to Maxpreps, the Lady Buffs opened their season with a win over Prairie last week.

"We have a pretty tough schedule this year, but I am sure that this hard working group will start to prevail as the season progresses," Scholl added.

New rankings released earlier this week list Flatirons Academy as the number one team in all of 1A action.

Briggsdale falls at number two, Fleming in three, Merino in four, McClave at five and Haxtun in sixth. Sangre De Cristo, Lone Star, Kit Carson and Dove Creek all round out the top 10.
