Lady Wildcats open with solid 2-0 start

Fleming's Lady Wildcats opened the basketball season last week with a solid 2-0 start. The local ladies hosted the neighboring Haxtun Lady Bulldogs on Friday night and the Evangelical Christian Lady Eagles on Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats and Lady Bulldogs put on an exciting show for fans in Friday night's season opener. Fleming led by just a single point after the opening quarter and widened the spread by another three points before the end of the first half, 28-24.

The Lady Bulldogs fought back in the third quarter evening the score before taking the lead. Haxtun's offense added 14 points in the third quarter while shutting the Lady Wildcats down single digits with six. Haxtun led heading into the final quarter, 38-34.

Fleming returned the favor in the fourth quarter, outscoring the visiting team by eight to take a four-point victory. The Lady Wildcat offense tacked on 13 points in the final minutes of play and held Haxtun's offense to just five for the 47-43 win.

Senior Whitney Chinala led the Lady Wildcats on the scoreboard with 15 points. She sunk two three-point shots and made five of seven from the free-throw line. Her remaining four came off two-point field goals. Chintala also led the Lady Wildcats in assist with four and steals with three.

Sophomore Madi Serrato followed Chintala's point tally with nine points of her own. She earned hers by way of one three-point shot, two twos and a pair of free throws. Serrato also led the team in defensive rebounds with seven; she tied for the team-high total boards with eight. Junior Maddy Harms matched that rebound tally of eight. Hers split at two offensive and six defensive boards.

Junior Kally Kirkwood put up eight points for the night. She tacked on six from the floor in two-point field goals and went two for two from the charity stripe. Kirkwood followed Chintala in both assists and steals with three and two respectively.

Fleming cruised to a smooth victory on Saturday night against the Evangelical Christian Lady Eagles. The local ladies held a double-digit, 17-point lead by the half, 29-12. They nearly doubled that lead in the second half and the game closed with Fleming on top by 30, 51-21, over the visiting Lady Eagles.

Kirkwood led her team on the scoreboard for the night with 21 total points. She put 20 points on the board off two-point shots and went one for two from the free-throw line. Kirkwood, along with juniors Lexi Schaefer, Maddy Zink and Laney Schliesser, Chintala and Serrato, contributed three rebounds for the night.

Chintala also hit double digits for the Lady Wildcats with 16 points. She earned hers off two three-pointers, four two-point shots and a couple free throws. Chintala and Kirkwood matched each other in steals for the contest both tallying the team-high of eight.

Junior Maddy Harms led the home team under the hoop in boards. She brought down five total rebounds split at four offensive and one defensive.

The Lady Wildcat schedule on MaxPreps lists one game for this week. They're set to host the Caliche Lady Buffaloes this Friday, Dec. 10. Caliche enters the contest at 1-0 following a 32-24 week one victory over the Prairie Lady Mustangs. Games on Friday are set to begin at 4 p.m.
