HAXTUN LADY BULLDOG senior Allie Thompson drives around a Leyton Lady Warrior defender in a contest just before Christmas break. In their first outing of the new year, the Lady Bulldogs fell in a close match up with the Lady Indians from Yuma but rebounded for a win over Prairie the following day.

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs notched a win in the record column in their first outing back from Christmas break. An 18-point win gives the Lady Bulldog team their third win this season. Haxtun currently holds a 3-5 record.

Haxtun hit the road twice in the first weekend of basketball action as the team traveled to take on Yuma on Friday and Prairie on Saturday. In Saturday's action, both teams put nine points on the board in the first quarter at the home of the Lady Mustangs. The second quarter was all Lady Bulldogs as the ladies in red went on to add 19 points to their side of the score while defensively holding Prairie to just eight. The Lady Bulldogs held a 28-17 advantage at half time.

The second half played out much the same and with a large lead, many non-starters saw varsity action. The Lady Bulldogs added 18 points in the third quarter and six in the fourth to roll to a 52-34 win over the Lady Mustangs.

"We played a complete game at Prairie and were able to execute our zone and man offense against them," said Head Coach Arlan Scholl. "We started off a little slow and then got our game together and started to look like the Lady Bulldog team that I know continues to play hard every night."

Haxtun sophomore Cassidy Goddard put up 26 points in the contest against Prairie. She connected with 11 two-point shots and nailed four shots from the charity stripe to earn her 26. K'lyn Bornhoft added nine points to the Lady Bulldogs score followed by Allie Thompson with seven and Bobbi Starkebaum put up six.

Goddard also hit double-digits in the rebound column, pulling down 10. She nabbed five on offense and five on defense. Thompson brought down eight rebounds followed Starkebaum who pulled down five.

Taylor Schram tallied five assists and on the other side of the ball Bornhoft and Schram each registered four steals.

The night before, the Lady Bulldogs took on league foe and 2A opponent Yuma. The Lady Indians led by one, 11-10, after the first quarter but Haxtun evened things out in the second to tie things up at 20 at the half.

The third quarter competition evened out as both teams put 12 points on the board to keep the contest tied heading into the fourth and final quarter. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Indians battled in a close, back and forth contest, but ultimately the Lady Indians came out on top by three, 41-38.

"The game against a very good Yuma team was hard fought," Scholl said. "We stayed even throughout three quarters and just came up short at the end. I was pleased with our game plan and the execution. Yuma pressed us very hard full court and we withstood that pressure very well. We still need to improve our outside shooting, but we will continue to work on that."

Goddard led the Lady Bulldogs in the scoring department on Friday night, just as she did on Saturday. Goddard connected with seven shots under the basket for a total of 14 in Yuma. Schram added eight points to the board followed by Kelsie Hadeen with six and Bornhoft and Thompson, each with four. Hadeen went 100 percent from the free-throw line, sinking two shots.

Thompson and Goddard each pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs under the hoop. Bornhoft brought down six rebounds while Hadeen and Cassidy Goddard each registered four rebounds.

Schram tallied five assists on offense while Bornhoft led with four steals on defense.

"Overall it was a good weekend and we continue to improve," Scholl said.

This week the Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to host Sedgwick County on Friday night. According to Maxpreps, the Lady Cougars are currently 5-1 overall. The team suffered a loss to Briggsdale but have since picked up wins over South Platte, Holyoke, Creek Valley, Caliche and Haxtun. The first time the two teams met, Sedgwick County came out on top 56-35.

Games in Haxtun on Friday are set to begin with junior varsity at 4 p.m.
