SC/F wrestling team brings home championships; Burr earns 100th win

On Dec. 18 the Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestling team traveled to Wray to participate in the Bob Smith Invitational to close out the 2021 portion of the season. The team finished in fifth place with 70.5 points out of 13 teams. They team also finished the day with three champions. Results of matches wrestled by team members competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

106-pound sophomore Kaiden Schelling finished his day 3-0 earning the championship in his weight class. Schelling defeated Caleb Deines of Merino, 12-0. He then defeated Austin Snapp of Wray, 4-2. This put Schelling in the championship match against Sid Dillon of Chatfield. He defeated Dillon by fall in 5:59.

Next to take the mat for SC/F was freshman Scotty Engle at 113 pounds. Engle also finished his day 3-0 earning the champion title of his weight class. He defeated Tayshaun Thomas of Akron by fall in :44. He then went on to defeat Atlas Grosh of Chatfield with an 18-1 tech fall. This win put Engle in the championship match against Merek Charney of Akron where he won, 8-2.

Sophomore Keegan Colglaizer wrestled at 145 pounds for the team. He lost his first match to Michael Buoy of Wray by fall before defeating Jack Frerichs of Wray, 4-0. In his final match of the day, he lost to Trey Stegman of Yuma by fall.

Taking the mat at 152 pounds was sophomore Joshua Wright. Wright lost to Tayte Smith of Yuma and Ashton Parmer of Limon by fall.

160-pound freshman Ryan Davis lost to Kayden Powell of Byers and Yahir Trejo of Yuma by fall.

Senior Hayden Burr kept his perfect record going for the season at 170 pounds after taking a 13-0 record into Christmas break. Burr defeated Sam Trusty of Holyoke with a 2:41 fall. He then defeated Connor Clark of Dayspring Christian Academy by fall in 5:15. Burr then defeated Keon Bandy of Limon by fall in 4:57. This win put him in the 170-pound championship match against Wray’s Payton Wade where he earned the 170-pound championship following a tough 6-5 match.

The 2022 portion of the season opened on Jan. 8 when the wrestlers traveled to Oshkosh, Neb. to participate in the Garden County Invitational. This was their first tournament following a couple weeks off for Christmas break. SC/F performed well bringing home the second place team plaque. They scored 101.0 points outscoring 20 other teams.

Senior Hayden Burr earned his 100th high school career win and was also selected the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. This award is voted on by the coaches of each team.

This week Burr dropped down from the 170-pound weight class to the 160-pound class. He finished his day the 160-pound champion. Burr defeated Trey McCrumb of Wauneta-Palisade by fall in 2:21. He then defeated Jesse Dunn of Sioux County by fall in 2:48. Continuing his undefeated day, Burr then defeated Beau Lake of Bayard in his semifinal match by a score of 6-1. This win put him in the championship match against the number-one ranked 160-pounder in Colorado’s 2A rankings, Greg Coy of Highland. Burr defeated Coy 6-0 marking his 100th high school career win.

106-pound Schelling had a good return to the mat as he finished his day the 106-pound champion for the second consecutive event. Schelling defeated Chris Loyd of Garden County with a fall in 1:15. He then beat Matthew Johnson of Kimball, 5-2. This win put him in the championship match against Nathaniel Barker of Bayard. Schelling defeated Barker, 9-6, for the title.

Engle finished his day in second place at 113 pounds. He defeated Daniel Maxwell of Highland with a fall in 1:06 and then went on to defeat Luke Harper of Sutherland by fall in 1:18. His opponent in the championship match was Creel Weber of Hemingford. Engle lost to Weber by a score of 8-2.

120-pound Gage Helgoth won his first match against Kimball’s Cody Brinkman with a fall in 3:12. He then lost his next two matches to Cayden White of Chase County and Aiden Narvais of Gering by fall.

Colglazier started his day off by defeating Oscar Gonzalez of Scottsbluff with a fall in :29. He then lost to Colton Pouk of Perkins County by fall and Kason Bruns of Sutherland by a score of 6-2.

Also competing at 160 pounds was Davis. He lost both his matches by fall to Tanner O’Brien of Hitchcock County and Brice Vitosh of Chase County.

The wrestlers plan to travel to Holyoke on Thursday, Jan. 8 for a triangular against Holyoke and St. Francis, Kan. The triangular is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. The team is then sceheduled to travel to Imperial, Neb. on Jan. 15 to participate in Chase County Invitational.
