HAXTUN SENIOR OWEN Knode is fouled by Sedgwick County Cougar defenders from both sides while putting up a shot under the basket Friday night. The Bulldogs beat Sedgwick County for their first win since returning to play from the holiday break.

The Haxtun Bulldogs notched a 17-point win over the Sedgwick County Cougars on Friday night. The win over the Cougars marks the second for the Bulldogs this season as the two teams also met at the beginning of the season. Haxtun came out on top in that contest as well.

"I thought this was a good bounce back game," said Head Coach Jayden Stieb. "The boys have been playing really good defense lately. We're still trying to work out some things on offense."

The 54-37 win over Sedgwick County gives the Bulldogs an overall 6-3 record heading into the final 10 games of the regular season. According to MaxPreps, Haxtun is 1-1 in league play.

Senior Isaac Andersen led the Bulldogs in points Friday night with 15. Senior Owen Knode put up 12 and junior Maclin Tempel added 11.

Rankings released from Colorado Preps on Monday have the Bulldog basketball team ranked seventh in all of Colorado 1A. Evangelical Christian holds the number one spot ahead of number two Briggsdale, three Granada, four Sierra Grande, five Denver Jewish Day and six Belleview Christian. Denver Waldorf comes in at number eight behind Haxtun and Caprock Academy as nine and Front Range Baptist in 10th round out the top ranked teams in 1A boys' basketball action.

Haxtun is set to host Holyoke on Friday night and Otis on Saturday for a double-header at home.

"This week we're going to have to really focus on getting more rebounds and being more physical," Stieb said.

The Bulldogs faced Holyoke in mid-December at the home of the Dragons. In a tough, physical battle Haxtun led for much of the first half but ended up falling 62-53 on the road to the Dragons.

According to MaxPreps, the 2A Dragons are 6-4 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Junior varsity action on Friday against Holyoke is set to begin at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, the Haxtun hosts the Bulldogs from Otis beginning with junior varsity at 2 p.m. Otis, a fellow 1A team, is 5-4 overall and 1-1 in their league.
