Jan. 20, 1937

Earl Atkins, Fleming girl married Jan. 3: The marriage of Miss Mildred Bledsoe of Fleming and Earl Atkins of Haxtun took place on Sunday, Jan. 3 at the Community Church in Fleming. The two o'clock p.m. ceremony was performed by the Rev. L.A. Haruf.

One of the oldest residents of the Haxtun country was called to his reward during the past week when Samuel E. Nelson, 78, passed away Saturday (Jan. 16, 1937) as the result of influenza. He was a resident of this community for 30 years.

Relatives in Haxtun learned of the death of Ray Clark Kinzie, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Kinzie, who passed away at his home in Sterling.

Assets of the defunct Farmers State Bank at Haxtun were sold this week to G.E. Nolan and Company of Denver, for the sum of $1,311.

Two homes at Haxtun have been quarantined the past week because of scarlet fever. Mrs. E. Monroe became ill with the malady last week and a few days later her daughter was taken ill. The other case reported is the Bert Intermill family with two family members contracting the disease.

Kenneth Hadeen of Haxtun was recently initiated into Alpha Zeta, national agriculture honorary, on the Colorado A&M campus at Fort Collins. Hadeen is a technical soils major and is a junior,

The body of Pfc. Glen E. Waterman, 21, recently arrived in the United States and funeral services were held Wednesday in Sterling. His death occurred Sept. 17, 1951, near Tokkol-Li, North Korea, from shrapnel wounds received while on active duty there.

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Garretson attended the stock show in Denver last week. Their children stayed with Mrs. Rowan and daughter. Their youngest daughter, Yolanda, fell down a basement stair, fracturing her nose and badly bruising her face.

Bulldog Wags - Among those who attended the stock show in Denver were Harold Lundgren, Barbara Fryrear, Joyce Fryrear, Nina Freemyer, Kenneth Gueck, Bob Cunningham, and Erwin Wilterdink.

Bulldog Wags, Senior Sketch - Darlene Lois Fisbeck comes to us from Paoli, where she spent all of her 17 years. She has a variety of nicknames, the most common of which is "Fizzy."

Jan. 20, 1977

John T. Anderson celebrated his 94th birthday on Jan. 7, 1977. He was born in Hjerthlander, Sweden, in 1883, and came to the community in 1889 with his parents, Anders and Edia Anderson. He is the father of Robert T. Anderson, Arvid O. Anderson, Mrs. J.C. (Freda) Ricker, and Mrs. Lorin (Phyllis) Starkebaum. He married Hilma C. (Sorenson) Anderson, who died in 1971.

James Dunham, fast-draw artist and Old West historian, and The Crazy David Road Show, will be entertainment for the Lions Club Chuckwagon Dinner on Jan. 29.

Cedar Row Farm, Fleming, owned and operated by Elmer Hedges, recorded the top number of registered Duroc feeder hogs in Colorado, 147, during 1976. Hedges has been raising hogs for seven years.

Fleming News - Tamy Schepler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dorvin Schepler and a senior in high school, has been chosen by her school to represent them as Fleming Heart Queen.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Anderson announce the engagement of their daughter Cheryl to Anthony P. Naff. After a June wedding the couple plan to join the staff of the Navigators, an international Christian organization.

30 Years Ago

Jan. 23, 1992

Colby Starkebaum, 18 months, sits very still while getting his first haircut by Laurie Sauder of Headlines. His parents are John and Julia Starkebaum of Haxtun.

Anna Marie Langdon, 80, Fleming, evidently died of exposure after falling outside her home last week. The assumption is that she had not been able to get her mail since the snowstorm on Jan. 7 and had tried walking to her mailbox.

Jory Michelle Schaefer, daughter of Bob and Laura Schaefer, is 1992's first baby of the year at Haxtun Hospital District. She was delivered by Dr. Brian Schmalhorst.

Beginning next term, Haxtun's mayor will earn $60 per month and council members will make $45 per month. The mayor currently earns $40 per month and council members earn $30.

Businessman of the year Rudy de la Rambelje receives a plaque from outgoing Haxtun Chamber President Sherrilyn Smith during Monday night's banquet. He and his wife Susan are moving to Hawaii.

The Fleming community is rallying together to help one of their own. A soup supper and an evening of fun and games is planned for Jan. 28 to help Nick Helgoth and his family. Nick was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma grade three brain tumor on Nov. 1.

Hoop action resulted in a loss and a win for the Haxtun Bulldogs last week. The Bulldogs took a home court victory over the Creek Valley Storm on Friday but the night before suffered a loss on the road to the Fleming Wildcats.

The Haxtun Lady Wildcats battled in a close, two-point contest with the Creek Valley Lady Storm on Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs lost but put up a season high of 44 points.
