Hayden Burr earns third consecutive outstanding wrestler title

The Sedgwick County-Fleming wrestling team had a long weekend wrestling three days in three different states. On Thursday, Jan. 20 they traveled to Wray to dual Dolores Huerta Preparatory and Wray. On Jan. 21, they participated in the UNK Midwest Dual Tournament in Kearney, Neb. and on Jan. 22 they participated in the Buffalo Invitational in Atwood, Kan.

SC-F defeated Dolores Huerta Preparatory, 48-21, and then lost to Wray, 59-16.

Results from the two duals for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

106-pounds Kaiden Schelling, 0-2; 113/120-pounds Scotty Engle, 2-0; 120/126-pounds Gage Helgoth, 1-1; 145-pounds Keegan Colglazier, 1-1; 160-pounds Hayden Burr, 2-0; 170-pounds Grant Statz, 1-1.

At the UNK Midwest Duals in Kearney SC-F had five duals. This was a tough dual tournament against some bigger Nebraska schools. The team lost to Columbus 61-16, Bellevue West 54-20, and Minden 54-16. They then defeated Kearney Catholic, 52-18, and then lost to Kearney High JV, 55-18.

Individual results from the five duals for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

106-pound Schelling, 3-2; 113-pound Engle, 5-0; 120-pound Helgoth, 1-4; 145-pound Colglazier, 2-3; 160-pound Burr, 4-1; 170-pound Statz, 2-3; 145-pound JV Joshua Wright, 0-1; 160-pound JV Ryan Davis, 0-3.

SC-F finished their three-day journey in Atwood at the Buffalo County Invitational. The team finished in third place out of 11 teams. They had three champions, two third place finishes and two fourth place finishes. Burr was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament for the third week in a row.

Individual results from the Buffalo County Invitational for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

Schelling finished his day as the 106-pound champion. Schelling defeated Colten Schurr of Goodland with a fall in :28. He then defeated Tate Blackwill of Wakeeney-Trego Community, 14-0. He then defeated Julian Orantia of Liberal with a fall in 3:16 for the championship.

113-pound Scotty Engle also finished his day at the champion of his weight class. Engle defeated Shane Todd of St. Francis with a fall in 1:30. This win put him in the championship match against Gus Hanson of Atwood-Rawlins County. Engle defeated Hanson, 13-6.

Helgoth wrestled at 120 pounds. He was defeated by Asher Robbins of St. Francis by fall. He then defeated Jackson Yost of Goodland with a fall in 2:02. Helgoth was then defeated by Simon Salcido of Colby High School, 9-0.

Joshua Wright wrestled at 145 pounds. He lost to Shannon Rethke of St. Francis and Cai Lanning of Colby by fall. Wright continues to improve and works hard.

Also, at 145 pounds was Keegan Colglazier. Colglazier defeated Cai Lanning of Colby with a fall in 1:11. He then lost his next two matches to end his day. He lost to Easton Nickelson of Hoxie by fall and Shannon Rethke of St. Francis, 8-0.

160-pound Hayden Burr finished his weekend on top winning the 160-pound championship and was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. This was the third week in a row that Hayden received this award. Burr defeated Henry Holle of Atwood-Rawlings County by fall in 4:25. He then defeated Yahir Gomez of Liberal by fall in 1:46. In the championship match Burr defeated Tristen Porter of Leoti-Wichita County, 11-2.

Also, at 160 pounds was Ryan Davis. Davis was defeated by Alex Schwindt of Liberal by fall. He then defeated Caleb Hill of Colby with a fall in 2:20. In his final match of the day, Davis lost to Yahir Gomez of Liberal in a hard-fought match, 5-0.

Grant Statz finished his day in third place at 170 pounds. He defeated Max Arcos of Liberal with a fall in :34. He then lost to Trystian Juarez of Liberal by fall. Statz then defeated Cameron Lilly of Colby with a fall in :43 and Stanton Cure of Burlington with a fall in 1:32.
