Wildcats fall in two close road games last week; drop to 5-8 overall

The Fleming Wildcats dropped to 5-8 overall after suffering to close losses on the road last week. The Wildcats fell by five at Akron last Thursday and by just one against a highly ranked Briggsdale team.

Fleming came out on top in the opening quarter of Thursday's game at Akron jumping to a seven-point lead, 20-13. The Ram defense took over in the second quarter and held Fleming to just two points while the offense tacked on 15 to take a six-point advantage. Akron held a 28-22 lead at halftime.

Scoring in the second half evened out between the two squads with both teams adding 16 in the third and the Wildcats outscoring the home team by one in the final. Akron remained out in front at the final horn by five, 60-55.

Saturday night's contest at Briggsdale came down to the wire as the then second-ranked, undefeated Falcons bested Fleming by just a single point. Briggsdale dropped to number three in the Colorado High School Activities Association rankings this week.

Briggsdale opened on top by three, 15-12, but Fleming closed in on two points of that gap by the end of the half. The Falcons led by just one at the end of the second, 29-28.

The two teams matched each other in scoring for both the third and fourth quarters adding 14 and six apiece, respectively. The score settled with home team on top, 49-48.

A trio of Wildcats hit double digits at Akron last week. Junior Braylen Feather led with 24 points. He added 15 of those from outside the three-point arc and went 60 percent in both two-point buckets and free throws for the remaining nine.

Junior Blake Feather followed with 11 points sinking 80 percent of his two-pointers for eight points and one three-point shot.

Junior Kolten Houser rounded out the trio with 10 points off four two-pointers and a pair of free throws.

That same junior trio added top numbers under the net, but junior Harry Harms led overall. Harms brought down seven rebounds - all of those under the Rams' net. Blake Feather followed with six boards; Braylen Feather and Houser each grabbed five.

Houser led the Wildcat offense on Saturday at Briggsdale. He scored 16 points for the night making one three-pointer, six twos and a free throw. He also contributed the team-high rebounds in the contest with 10 - giving him a double-double.

Senior Joel Muller put up an additional 10 points for the Wildcats. He earned his off two three-pointers and two two-point buckets.

Harms followed Houser in rebounds with eight total. He split his at four offensive and four defensive. Blake Feather brought down another seven; all of those on defense.

The Wildcats return to their home court this week in Friday/Saturday action. They're set to host the Warriors of Weldon Valley to open the week with a league contest. They'll then take on Genoa-Hugo/Karval on Saturday. Friday's games are set for a 4 p.m. tip off; Saturday's begin at 2 p.m.

The Wildcats will be on the road for the final two games of the regular season. Those are set for Saturday, Feb. 12 at Flatirons Academy and Thursday, Feb. 17, at Sedgwick County.
