April 21, 1937

First prize was awarded to Jean Kluger of Fleming, at the amateur show at the Rialto Theater Tuesday evening. The audience chose Mary Clark, tap dancer, for second prize, and Lawrence Carsten, who sang and played the guitar, as third-place winner.

Shirley Ann Brahmstadt, the two-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brahmstadt of Paoli, passed away at a Holyoke hospital last Wednesday.

Hospital News - Mr. and Mrs. Robert Griffith are the parents of a son born Friday. He was named David Saul.

Mrs. Jennie Jones, 84, resident of the Haxtun community since 1908, passed away Tuesday morning, April 22, 1952.

There has been a movement underway in Haxtun for some time to secure lights for the softball and baseball field. The lights now in use are inadequate. With the increasing popularity of night baseball games and since the other towns entered in the league already have lighted fields for this sport, a meeting has been called at the new fire hall for Friday evening to present this community project.


Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. John Volz and son Sidney of Sterling and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Ballinger and family, Mr. and Mrs. Finnis Brown and family, Ed Lousberg and children, and Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Brown of Haxtun were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hradecky.

Louis Harmon explained his recommendations to Haxtun town officials Monday night concerning upgrading the water system. Harmon owns Harmon Engineering Services in Holyoke.


Citizen of the Year recipient George "Doc" McCullough received a plaque from local Lions Club secretary/treasurer Glenn Brundige recently.

Betty Schropfer has been selected April artist of the month at Haxtun High School The picture will be on display at the Herald office through the month of April.

Raenell Heath was named queen and Steve Boerner was named king at the Fleming High School Junior-Senior banquet and prom Friday night. Crownbearers were Donna White and Ryan Schmidt.

Fleming News - The snowdrift in front of the Chas W.F. Atkinsons' home is almost gone. They can now see over it. It blocked their view of the street for nearly a month.

The Haxtun United Methodist Church was the setting Saturday, April 2, for the candlelight service that united Judy Byrkit and Roger Stewart in marriage. The double-ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Gordon Benesh.

As his final official act, Haxtun Mayor J.B. Hoadley administered the oath of office to incoming board members Mayor Gay McDaneil, returning board member Don Lock, and new board members Dennis Ulmer and Bob Sauder.

Haxtun 4-H winners, district Jamboree, Sterling: Haley Wernsman, reserve champion, vocal solo; Shanda McConnell, junior grand champion overall, junior piano solo.

The Haxtun Chamber of Commerce recently announced the theme and grand marshals for the 2012 Corn Festival celebration scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29.

Grand Marshals Van and Julia Luifau will lead this year's parade to the Corn Festival theme, "The Road Home..."


Birth: Tom and Jessica Bullard, Haxtun, announce the birth of their son, Cooper Thomas Bullard on April 5, 2012.
