The Garden of the Dawgs greenhouse build project began with Haxtun Junior High students in October. With advice from many valuable sources, the students used repurposed and donated materials for construction, completing it in February.

In addition to the plants, students came up with garden projects to build and sell including bird baths, elevated beds, birdhouses, fairy jars and wash tables. Students were also responsible for all communications and grant writing for every stage and aspect. Haxtun students were tremendously successful earning $3,950 in grants and $4,000 in donations.

High School Business Teacher Janet Brophy taught students how to make metal signs using the FBLA press at The Doghouse as well as provided an activity for them to learn how to price the products. Seedlings were planted in mid-February. Currently, the newly transplanted vegetables and flowers are growing like crazy.

The Garden of the Dawgs Greenhouse project was made possible with assistance from Pioneer Seeds, Elite Resources, Prairie Gold Application, Troy and Jeri Anderson, Haxtun Building Center, CHS Grainland, Shawn Medrano, Premier Farm Credit, Heginbotham Trust, Walmart Community Grant and Phillips County Farm Bureau.

The sale will be Friday, May 13 from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the greenhouse behind the high school.
