Another business firm in Haxtun changed hands this week when Ruby's Cash Market was purchased by H.B. Prouty and son Floyd. Floyd will be in charge of the store, which is located in the Shirley Hotel building.

Clinton Jeffers was high-point man of Monday's Haxtun-Holyoke track meet with a total of 22 points. Arden Sack was second with 21 points. Donnelly of Holyoke had 17, and Clyde Jeffers had 16.

Teachers for the grade school at Haxtun for the 1937-38 year: first, Miss Ruby Bellamy; second, Miss Esther Ewing, Julesburg; third, Miss Celeste Donnelly; fourth, Miss Fern Schachterle; fifth, Miss Mary Arlene Long, Yuma; sixth, Mrs. Lida Berkey; seventh, John Nauman; eighth, Miss Grace Galbreath; principal, Clair A. Skold. The board voted to increase the wages of the grade school faculty for the coming year. The raise will amount to 10 dollars per month for a period of 10 months.

April 30, 1952

Pvt. Charles Kenneth Boyd, formerly of Haxtun, is completing his Air Force basic indoctrination course at Lackland AFB at San Antonio, Texas.

Fleming News - New FFA officers are president Barbara Schlenz; first vice president, Joan Fitzjohn; second vice president, Elsie Burenheide; secretary, Delma Blobaum; treasurer, Alice Parks; historian, Karen Schepler; parliamentarian, Rose Weibers; reporter, JoAnn Sonnenberg; song leader, Inez Kinzie; student council representative, Vada Miles.

Mrs. Julia McCulloch of Holyoke was a Haxtun visitor Tuesday evening. Her son Lawrence, who is stationed at the AF base at Amarillo, Texas, will be home next week on a 20-day furlough before going to Alaska.

April 28, 1977

Michael Ragon has been offered head coaching of both varsity boys' football and basketball teams for the next year. He will also teach science in the absence of Jim Davis, who has resigned his post with science and football. Elden Reutter is the Haxtun School superintendent.

Fleming News - Kindergarten registration was held this week with only six coming: Timothy Legg, Neal Lousberg, Marvin Pemberton, Douglas Vandenbark, Jennie Mathiason and Cheryl Marie. Brooke Ledden is another possible member of the class.

30 Years Ago

April 30, 1992

Members of Haxtun Brethren Church opened their anniversary celebration this past Sunday by releasing 75 balloons. The church organized before 1917 but moved into the church building that year.


Hilda Ferguson entertained the Fairfield Friends Club at the Haxtun Manor. Present were Brenda Roos, Mildred Seeley, Mildred Jeffers, Emily Skold, Hazel Hadeen, Letha Holmquist, Lois Rhodes, Violet Mae Anderson and Gladys Bjorklun.

Catina Klinzmann was selected as artist of the month for February at Haxtun School. She is the daughter of Pat and Ellen Klinzmann and is a junior.

Haxtun trackster Staci Starkebaum concentrates for her discus throw. Dan Hershfeldt places third with a 17'6" jump in the North Central league track meet Saturday at Prairie.

Nathan Brasby rode in Saturday's Bike-a-thon sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Haxtun.

Fleming News - Navy Seaman Recruit Jeffry K. Roll, whose wife Laura is the daughter of Charles and Carol Brace of Fleming, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Seniors Jeff Allen, Fleming, and Kent Hiller, Haxtun, have demonstrated strong character and a determination to succeed in life and so have been named Daniels Scholars who will receive funding to attend the college or university of their choice, as announced recently by Linda Childears, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Daniels Fund.
