In a three match day of play in tournament action on Saturday, the Haxtun Lady Bulldogs came out 2-1 with wins of over Wellington and Weldon Valley and a loss to Prairie. The weekend’s action leaves the local volleyball team 6-7 overall as the Lady Bulldogs head into homecoming week and their first home games of the season.

The tournament, played in Brush, featured best of three action in which the Lady Bulldogs totaled six sets on the day. Haxtun fell to Prairie in game one, 2-0, but came back to sweep Wellington and Weldon Valley, 2-0, to take a winning record from the tournament.

“We did not start out well at Brush in the morning against Prairie, but we re-grouped and played good against Wellington and Weldon Valley,” said Don Schelling, Lady Bulldog Head Coach. “I was happy with how we played the last two games!”

Haxtun matched up with Prairie for the second time this season in the first contest of volleyball action on Saturday morning. For the second time this season, Prairie walked away with the win. In the first outing, the Lady Mustangs earned their win in five sets; Saturday they earned the 2-0 sweep with set one 26-24 and set two, 25-18.

The Lady Bulldogs returned to the court in the second contest, this time against the Lady Eagles from Wellington. Haxtun took a commanding first set win, 25-15, and an even better set two, 25-11, for the win.

The final match of the day pitted the Lady Bulldogs against the Lady Warriors from Weldon Valley. Haxtun took the first set, 25-20, and according to Schelling, found themselves down 19-11 in set two. The Lady Bulldogs battled back for a second set win, 27-15, for the win and the sweep over Weldon Valley.

“We fought hard and were super scrappy and ended up winning that set,” Schelling said of his team’s comeback.

Three Lady Bulldogs led in kills throughout the Brush tournament including Bobbi Starkebaum, Cassidy Goddard and Megan Walker. Starkebaum led her team for the day with 16 kills. Goddard put down 12 followed by Walker with 10. At the net, defensively, Starkebaum, Goddard, Kelsie Hadeen and Jayleigh Bullard all tallied one block for the day.

In the serving department, five led in aces including Walker with the team high of six. Goddard sent over four aces followed by Julia Freeman, Starkebaum and Emily Anderson, each with two aces throughout the six sets.

The setting duo of Hadeen and Starkebaum put up a combined 32 assists on Saturday. Hadeen led with 26 assists followed by Starkebaum with 16.

In the back row, Goddard and Walker registered 43 digs between the two including 22 from Goddard and 21 from Walker. Freeman registered nine digs while Hadeen tallied seven and Anderson had five. On serve receive, Walker and Freeman led in passes. Walker registered 27 from the back row, Freeman put up 17.

This week Haxtun will host their first two home games of the season. The Lady Bulldogs faced off against Wray at home on Tuesday afternoon and on Friday, the team will host the neighboring Fleming Lady Wildcats. Friday’s contest will mark the annual homecoming contest for Haxtun. Games begin at 4 p.m.

“The girls are really excited to play at home finally. There’s always a little more fire at home games,” said Schelling. “We will keep working on our new defense and cover some areas that should help us on Friday. Main thing is to focus on us getting better in certain areas and to play loose and have fun with high energy!”
