Lady Bulldogs take two home-court wins

HAXTUN LADY BULLDOG Bobbie Starkebaum denies a kill attempt from a Lady Ram with a block at the net on Friday night. She registered four blocks against Akron.

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs improved to 9-8 with two home-court wins last week. The local volleyball team picked up wins over Yuma and Akron in front of their fans at Haxtun High School to pick up a winning percentage with just six games left on the regular schedule before post-season play begins.

A Tuesday night match up pitted the Lady Bulldogs against the 2A Yuma Lady Indians. Haxtun nabbed wins in sets one and two, 25-13 and 25-23, but fell in set three 25-19. Following a third set deficit, the Lady Bulldogs rallied in the fourth for a 25-18 win to take the contest in four.

As a team, the Lady Bulldogs put 48 kills down in the match up with Yuma. Bobbi Starkebaum had an outstanding showing with 17 of the teams 48. Cassidy Goddard also reached double-digits, putting down 10. Maggie Kilgour, Megan Walker and Julia Freeman each registered six. Starkebaum and Goddard combined for six blocks at the net.

From behind the service line, the Lady Bulldogs went 89.2 percent in the four-set win. Starkebaum and Emily Anderson led in aces, each with three, followed by Grace Gibson and Goddard, each with two.

Kelsie Hadeen handled the ball 22 times, setting up her hitters at the net. Starkebaum added eight assists followed by Walker with seven.

In the back row, on serve receive, Walker had 27 successful passes. Freeman registered 16 passes followed by Anderson with 15 and Goddard with 14. As for digs, Walker registered 18 from the back row followed by Goddard and Freeman with 13 and Anderson with 10.

On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs hosted the Lady Rams from Akron, taking a sweep at home. Haxtun nabbed three commanding wins, 25-13, 25-11 and 25-16.

For the second match in a row, Starkebaum led her team in kills with 12. Walker added eight and Kilgour put down six. Total, Haxtun put 36 kills on the floor in the three-set win.

At the net, Starkebaum registered four blocks, the team high. Goddard tallied one.

Friday night the Lady Bulldogs served 87.7 percent from behind the service line. Goddard served 100 percent while also registering three aces. Anderson and Starkebaum each also served three aces.

Freeman dug up 11 balls in the back row on defense Friday night. She also registered nine passes on serve receive. Anderson and Walker put up double-digits on serve receive, led by Anderson with 11 and Walker with 10.

Against the Lady Rams, Hadeen registered 19 assists for Lady Bulldog kills.

This week Haxtun will travel to Caliche High School to take on the Lady Buffs. MaxPreps lists the Lady Buffs at 2-10 on the season. Game time on Friday is slated for 4 p.m.
