Cats take homecoming win over Warriors

The Fleming Wildcats maintain their number two spot in Colorado High School Activities Association's 6-man rankings following a commanding Friday, Oct. 7 homecoming victory over the Warriors of Weldon Valley. The Stratton Eagle remain in the top slot.

Friday night's contest on Fleming's home field opened with a Wildcat touchdown by junior Wyatt Cochran in the opening minutes of the game. Cochran followed it up with a blocked kick which he picked up and returned for the second touchdown of the game. By the end of the first quarter, Fleming had gone on to take a 30-0 lead over the Warriors.

The Wildcats added another 16 in the second quarter and gave up none to go up 46-0 bringing the mercy rule into effect and the clock would run for the remainder of the game.

With several younger players on the field, Fleming tacked on another 12 in the second half to settle at 58 for the night. The Warriors found the end zone twice in the last half and closed with 13 on the scoreboard.

The Wildcat offense rushed for 202 yards on the night. Freshman Wyatt Sonnenberg led the squad with 85 yards on 10 carries. Senior Nolan Japp followed with 32 yards on two carries. Junior Matix Haney and senior Blake Feather added 28 yards and 21 yards, respectively; each carried the ball twice.

Senior Braylen Feather and sophomore Derek Houser split time running the Wildcat offense from the quarterback position. Both players completed one pass. Feather started as QB and completed one of three attempts for 20 yards. Houser completed one of one for 13 yards.

Cochran led the Wildcats in receiving yards after catching the 20-yard pass from Braylen Feather. His catch resulted in six on the scoreboard. Hayden Lockard, a senior guard out of Lone Star, caught the pass off Houser's arm. He also found the end zone for a TD.

Kolten Houser, the elder of the Houser brothers, led the Fleming defense with eight tackles on the night. He brought down six solo and two assisted. Blake Feather followed with five solo and two assisted take downs.

Blake Feather, who also serves at the team's kicker, put five of six attempts at two points through the uprights giving him 10 conversion points. He also added six points on a rushing TD to lead the team with 16 in the contest. Cochran and sophomore Travis Johnson followed with 12 points apiece.

The Wildcats are scheduled to travel to the home of the Prairie Mustangs this week. Prairie moved into the top 10 in CHSAA's rankings this week with a narrow, two-point victory over Branson/Kim last Saturday. The Mustangs enter this week's League contest against the Wildcats at 2-1 in the League and 4-2 overall. MaxPreps lists a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Oct. 14 at New Raymer.
