THE FLEMING LADY Wildcat volleyball team is pictured with their plaque after qualifying for the 1A State Volleyball Tournament for the 17th consecutive year. The Lady Wildcats hosted and defeated Belleview Christian and Cheraw on Saturday for Regional pool play and earned their State berth after sweeping both teams.

A pair of Saturday evening, home-court Regional sweeps last weekend gave the Fleming Lady Wildcats their 17th consecutive State berth. The Lady Wildcats, who entered Regionals as the number four seed, hosted number 13 Cheraw and number 21 Belleview Christian.

The local ladies cruised to victories in both contests and gave up an average of just 16 points per set to their opponents on the day.

The Lady Wildcats' front row played solid for the both matches. Senior Kally Kirkwood led in kills with 37 for the day. Freshman Ciana Lousberg followed with nine and junior Madi Serrato added another five.

Senior Maddy Harms led the team's defensive efforts with seven blocks in the tournament. Kirkwood followed with six blocks and freshman Ashley Bornhoft blocked another five.

Senior Lexi Schaefer dug 30 kill attempts on the day for the Lady Wildcat defense. She tacked on double digits in both contests. Kirkwood followed with 18 digs.

The Lady Wildcats have earned the number four seed in the State Tournament bracket. The placement gives them an opening-round bye and puts them on the court for their first match on Thursday around 3:30 p.m. against the winner of a match between Idalia and Stratton.

A win in Thursday's opening match for the squad would allow them to advance to a quarterfinal match on Friday at 2 p.m. A loss in Thursday's opening match would drop the Lady Wildcats on the elimination side of the bracket for an 8 a.m. match on Friday.

Merino, Kit Carson and McClave hold the three spots above Fleming in the bracket. Seeds five through 12 in order include Idalia, Wiley, Simla, Dove Creek, La Veta, Otis, Briggsdale and Stratton.
