Fleming goes 1-1 over past week; notches league win over Falcons

BLAKE FEATHER goes up for a two-point shot just outside the paint in Fleming's first league victory over Prairie. The Wildcats have since added two more league wins to their record.

The Fleming Wildcats notched a league victory over the Briggsdale Falcons last Saturday to leave them undefeated and in top spot in the North Central League.

Fleming opened the week with a five-point loss to 2A's number six ranked team, the Merino Rams.

The Wildcats opened on top by three after the first quarter, 18-15, and maintained that three point lead at the half, 41-38.

Merino shaved two points off Fleming's lead in the third, outscoring the home team by two, 10-8.

The final quarter sealed the win for the Rams as they added 13 to their side of the scoreboard while holding Fleming to seven. Merino took the narrow victory, 51-46.

Senior Braylen Feather owned just over half of the Wildcats tally with 24 points for the night. He added 12 points off three-point shots, 10 on two-pointers and went two-for-three from the charity stripe.

Senior Kolten Houser tacked on double digits with 14 points in the game. He made two-of-three shots outside the arc for six points and added the remaining eight on two-point buckets.

Braylen Feather and Houser also led their team under the basket in rebounds. Feather brought down seven total; two offensive and five defensive. Houser pulled down one offensive and three defensive for four on the night.

Seniors Blake Feather and Harry Harms led the squad in assists with four apiece. Braylen Feather led in steals with three; Houser followed with two.

Saturday night's league match up with Briggsdale opened with Fleming up by 10, 17-7. The two teams matched scores in the second quarter at 11 apiece to leave Fleming on top 28-18 at intermission.

The Wildcats returned to widen the scoring gap in the third, outscoring the Falcons by nine, 21-12. Fleming tacked on one more point than Briggsdale in the final quarter, 13-12, to take a solid 62-42 victory.

For the second night in a row, Braylen Feather scored over half of his team's total points. He tallied 32 for the night by way of five three-pointers, six two-pointers and five free throws.

Houser followed with 14 total points. He made two three-point shots, three two-pointers and two free throws.

Houser led the group in boards with eight. He brought down all eight on the defensive side of the court. Braylen Feather followed with seven rebounds. His were split at five offensive and two defensive. Harms grabbed another six rebounds for the Wildcats; one and five, respectively.

The Feather duo of Braylen and Blake matched each other with five assists to lead the team. Braylen Feather also added five steals, while Blake followed with three.

The now seventh ranked Wildcats faced off with an unranked 2A Akron team on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Results of that game had not been determined as of press time.

Weekend action puts Fleming on the road to Weldon Valley on Friday and Genoa-Hugo on Saturday. The Weldon Valley Warriors, who are unranked in Colorado High School Activities Association rankings, stand at 2-8 overall this season. Genoa-Hugo holds a 9-3 record this season. They stand one spot behind Fleming in CHSAA's rankings at number eight.
