Wrestlers close out regular season; prepare for regional tourneys this weekend

The Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestlers completed in their final week of the regular season traveling to Greeley where the boys dualed Dayspring Christian and the girls dualed Greeley West on Friday, Feb. 3. The boys’ team lost their dual by a score of 42-30, but did give up 24 points to open weights on the night. The girls won their three-women dual 12-6.

Winning matches for SCF were 126-pound Scotty Engle, 157-pound Bryan Van Houten Bagby, 165 lb. Grant Statz, and 175-pound Ryan Davis. All four of these wrestlers won by fall. Gage Helgoth won by forfeit in the 132-pound division.

Results from the girls’ dual against Greeley West for those competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

105-pound Destanie Engle won by fall.

The girls stayed in Greeley to compete in the Northridge Women’s tournament on Saturday, Feb. 4. Results for Haxtun and Fleming wrestlers for that day are as follows:

105-pound Destanie Engle finished her day at 3-1 and in second place. In round one, she won by fall in 2:26 over Alexandra Madsen, Poudre. She won round two by fall in 2:49 over Daisy Lopez, Pelico. Engle took round four by fall in :59 over Katie Duarte, Mead. In round five, Engle lost by fall to Katelyn Faczak, Bennett.

110-pound Aliyah Engle ended her day at 1-2. She won by fall in 1:12 over Willow Holloran, Poudre. In the semifinal match, she fell to Morgan Johnson, Loveland. Engle lost the consolation semifinal to Anna Bratton, Poudre, by fall.

The boys’ team traveled to Yuma on Saturday, Feb. 4 to dual Resurrection Christian, Burlington, Dayspring and Chatfield. SCF beat Resurrection Christian, 46-18; Burlington, 39-36; and Dayspring Christian, 37-24. These three wins put them in the championship dual against Chatfield. SCF lost this dual, 54-18, to finish the day in second place.

Results from wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming for the day are as follows:

175-pound Ryan Davis defeated Zach Stetz, Resurrection Christian, by major decision, 12-0. He defeated Avery Churchwell, Burlington, by fall in 0:48. Davis defeated Keoni Aricayos, Dayspring Christian, by fall in 2:19.

113-pound Kaiden Schelling won by forfeit over Resurrection Christian. He defeated Aaron Robles, Burlington, by fall in 4:55, and defeated Dayspring Christian’s Eliah Coniver by fall in 0:38.

132-pound Scotty Engle defeated Tobin Prebish, Resurrection Christian, by fall in 1:46. Engle competed at 126-pounds against Burlington’s Cooper Barnes and won by fall in 1:34. Engle won by forfeit in the 12-pound division over Dayspring Christian.

144-pound Jack Bornhoft defeated William Golden, Resurrection Christian, by fall in 2:20. He defeated Connor Halde, Burlington, by fall in 3:22. Bornhoft lost to Dayspring Christian’s Logan Clark by decision, 7-1.

150-pound Trent Wernsman lost to Pierson St. James, Resurrection Christian, by fall. He lost to Matthew Gutierrez, Burlington by fall.

165-pound Grant Statz defeated Tim Evans, Resurrection Christian, by fall in 0:49. He defeated Burlington’s Payten McCall by fall in 1:11. Statz defeated Wyatt Cross, Dayspring Christian, by fall in 1:28.

132-pound Gage Helgoth lost by fall to Jason Saucedo, Burlington, by fall. Helogth lost bay fall to Dayspring Christian’s Landen Beauvais, 6-4.

150-pound Kale Volkman lost by fall to Jacob Wilkinson, Dayspring Christian Academy.

Results for Haxtun and Fleming’s wrestlers in the Championship dual against Chatfield are as follows:

113-pound Kaiden Schelling lost to Trenton Moret by decision, 2-0.

126-pound Scotty Engle over Daniel Lynch by fall in 1:38.

132-pound Gage Helgoth lost by fall to Brody Moret.

144-pound Trent Wernsman lost by fall to Noah Lorenz.

150-pound Jack Bornhoft defetaed A.J. Hargreaves by fall in 1:00.

165-pound Grant Statz lost by fall to Noah O`Dougherty.

175-pound Ryan Davis lost by fall to Lyle Wiley.

Regionals for the boys’ team is set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11 at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. Friday’s matches are set to begin at 4 p.m. Session one on Saturday is scheduled for 9 a.m. with session two to follow. Finals will be immediately following this round.

Girls’ Regionals are set for Saturday, Feb. 11 in Broomfield at Broomfield High School. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with finals beginning at 6 p.m.
