Feb. 23, 1938

Mrs. Elizabeth Skold, wife of Lloyd Skold, and the mother of two small children, was summoned by death Monday evening of this week at Mercy Hospital in Denver. She passed away on her fifth anniversary. She was 28 years of age last August, and was born in reared at Mound City, Missouri. Her two sons are Glen, age four, and Melvin, age one.

Beginning March 1, the Haxtun State Bank will remain open during the noon hour and will close one hour earlier in the afternoon. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lyle Dillehay, Ted Johnson and Frank Jones expect to leave Thursday of this week for Washington, where they will seek employment.

A new community hospital at Haxtun, to be located on the second floor of the Drake Mercantile company building, will be opened on March 1, and operated by Miss Formosa Newman of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mrs. Esther Jensen of Ord, Neb.

Paoli News - Mr. and Mrs. Frank Woodworth entertained at a bridge party Thursday evening. The guests were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cheney, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Fulton, Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Verne Miller.

Feb. 25, 1953

The Haxtun community dug out Friday from the worst blizzard of the winter, which descended on this territory in the early hours of Thursday. By mid-morning and until late into the night, the storm resembled the fury of the three-day blizzard of January 1949. A near tragedy involving a school bus northwest of town was averted when the driver, after becoming stuck in the snowdrifts, led seven children through the blizzard to a farmhouse about a quarter of a mile away.

Miss Rosemary Maxine Miles of Fleming, who had a been admitted to the Haxtun Hospital Saturday, passed away early Monday morning following a short illness.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. George Harms entertained a group of friends Feb. 21 in honor of the birthday of George. Those present to enjoy an evening of Bingo were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Atkins, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Plank, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Brown and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hedges and family, Mr. and Mrs. Eldoh Sheels and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lee West, and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wertz, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Chaplin.

Feb. 23, 1978

The Paoli Jaycees presented a memorial check to the family of the late Fene Thompson last Tuesday.

Brett Salvador, a senior at Haxtun High School, is the FFA member of the week. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Salvador. His supervised farming program is irrigated corn.

Fleming boys' basketball team: Marc Sweet, Craig Loos, Neal Lambert, Bob Vandenbark, Don Hulse, John Williams, Brent Langdon, Gary Nelson, Dave Deines, Frank Boerner, Mike Brownell, Dale Lousberg and Ty Wardrip. Bob Miles coaches the team. Statisticians are Donelle Kirkwood, Dorothy Williams and Luann Loos. Kevin Burton is the manager.

Feb. 25, 1993

Two local teenagers, Arisa, Hind, and Amy Rush, will compete in the Miss Northeast Colorado Pageant on March 6 at Northeastern Junior College.

A headless Mark Gueck made the March 1993 issue of National Geographic magazine. Michelle Hadeen fared better, as did a replica of the Haxtun Co-op Elevator and Gueck's Irrigated Corn King sign. The photo was taken during the 1991 Haxtun Corn Festival and appears with a feature story on the Ogallala Aquifer.

The seven children of the late William and Susie Harms gathered in Colorado this past summer at Ethel Lambert's home in Greeley, getting together for the first time in 40 years. Their ages range from 62 to 82.

Haxtun Chief of Police Tanya Mayhew is asking local businesses to on the lookout for counterfeit money. Mayhew said her office received a report of counterfeit money from a Haxtun business last week and confirmed the money is phony.
