H.M. Clements, Phillips County sheriff, was seeking Wednesday the whereabouts of L.M. Dietz, itinerant sign painter, who worked at Haxtun for several days the past week. Dietz is said to have raised the amount of a check given him and it is believed that he left the community in a borrowed car. The check, in the amount of two dollars, was given to Dietz by John Kirchofer. The sign painter raised the amount on the check to $10 and cashed it at the Shell service station, according to police. The automobile he was driving belonged to the Clark Chevrolet Company. Dietz obtained the car on the pretense of trying it out before buying it. He claimed that a car that he had formally owned had been burned in Kansas, and that he was expecting insurance money with which to buy the car at Haxtun.
