A CROWD of over 200 watched the square dancing at the "Old Fashioned Saturday" in Haxtun. Many in the crowd joined in until 9:30 p.m. when the music stopped and everyone departed.

Dairymen and other person to handle milk and cream for commercial purposes have been warned by Dairy Commissioner W.H. Skitt that syrup pails, large cans, cooking utensils, cans without covers, galvanized pails and cans, or other containers that cannot be properly washed and sterilized are not proper containers for cream and milk.

A.B. Stauffer suffered an injury last Sunday that, it was feared, would cause him to lose the sight of his eye. He was working on machinery at his farm north of Haxtun, when a piece of chisel broke off and stuck him in the eye.

Harvesting of the wheat crop in the Haxtun territory, and throughout northeastern Colorado reached its height last week. Cutting of this year's crop, which is undoubtedly the best since 1931, is underway in every community. Softball has been under a handicap during the past week due to the harvest season.


Miss Wilma Nell of Haxtun and James Watson, Jr. of Holyoke, surprised their friends this week by announcing their marriage, which took place Monday, June 20.

July 15, 1953

Kenneth Irvin Saylor, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Saylor, was accidentally killed Thursday near Fort Morgan where he was working on an REA line. He came in contact with a live wire and was killed instantly.

Hospital News - Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Ham are the parents of a son born Thursday. He was named Rodney Lee.

Fairfield News - Miss Frances Bjorklun and Ulene Swedberg entertained a group of young people at the former's home Tuesday in honor of Lorin Garretson, Teddy Roos, and wife, and Richard Franson and wife, servicemen home on leave.

July 13, 1978

Carl Hoffman, a Haxtun town employee, was badly burned last Wednesday after he touched a 2400-volt powerline while working on the town's electrical system. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Vernon Price, reported that Hoffman is in good spirits and will undergo skin grafting later in the week.

Four Haxtun teenagers placed in the top three in their events at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference held this week in San Francisco. Bill Renzelman, Chad Fix and Tammy Ridenour placed third as members of the state team in Parliamentary Procedure. Beverly Wilson received the second place as Miss FBLA. Other members attending: Julie Scott, Art Lick, Rhonda Potter, and advisor Marilyn Garretson.


Mr. and Mrs. Claude Goddard, pictured with infant son, Casey, accept prizes awarded by the Haxtun Family Medicine Center from Sue Legg of the center. While attending a series of prepared childbirth classes, they accurately predicted that their baby would be born on July 7.

July 14, 19993

A one -vehicle accident southeast of Holyoke, Wednesday evening, July 7, took the life of 16-year-old, Erin Marie Mailander, daughter of Paul and Teresa Meilander.

Jim Beeler, Cochise, Ariz., reports for work on July 23 as the new administrator at the Haxtun Hospital. Beeler will bring with him his wife Jean, a registered nurse, and a two-year-old son.

Fleming's Chicago Cub members for the 1993 season are Ryan Etl, Brian Schaefer, Craig Brownell, Brandon Wernsman, Jeff Waterman, Joel Klug, Adam Schlenz, Andrew Dreier, Jimmy Torres, Grant Christopher, Michael Wolever, Brandon Krier, Paul Sweet, Tommy Unrein, Damon Schaefer, David Beck and Jared Hayda. Coach is Jerald Wernsman with assistants Dan Klugh and Lynn Dreier.


Ray Goddard celebrated his 101st birthday on July 16 at the Haxtun nursing home.

Lori Lundgren will again fill a seat on the Haxtun Town Council. Lundgren, who served on the council from 2008-2012, was appointed to fill a seat left vacant by Brian Lock. Lock resigned his position as councilman in early May.

Sunday evening rainfall slowed harvest crews down for a short time Monday morning, but overall wheat cutting is in full force. Grainland, Chief Executive Officer Rick Unrein said the company took in their first truckload in Holyoke on June 28 from Vern Rafert. The price of wheat as of Tuesday, July 9, is $6.56 per bushel.
