Mrs. Arlie Crossland was brought to the Mooney hospital Monday morning, suffering from burns she received when a gasoline stove exploded at her home south of Paoli.

Old-age pensions were paid to 158 persons in Phillips County in the month of July with the average payment of $30.13. Two persons received aid for the blind amounting to $45.

Word has been received here that Virgil Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller, was married Saturday, July 16, Pasadena, Calif.

July 29, 1953

Jean Thorn Hill, Janice Freemyer and Joy Monteith, who are attending a beauty school in Denver, spent the weekend and Haxtun with their parents.

Johnny Krueger, who moved from the Highland Center community to Nebraska, about 10 years ago, was accidentally drowned on Sunday afternoon at Enders Dam southeast of Imperial, Neb. He is survived by his wife and two children.


Paoli News - Alvin Kain of Sidney spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kain.

Alta Curtis of Fleming, has her blood pressure checked at the clinic held Friday at the VFW in Fleming. LaVaughn McCormick, LPN, checks the pressure. The clinic was sponsored by the Northeast Colorado LPN Association, The Heart Association and the Fleming Senior Citizens.


Paoli News - Mitch Miller won the bulldogging in the Chadron, Neb., rodeo Sunday. The Miller kids will be rodeoing in Fort Collins the 29th and 30th of July.

July 28, 1993

With the hiring of Kristi Boerner and Jim Mathews, the Haxtun school board has the staff for the 1992-93 school year in place. Boerner replaces Chris Brauer as third grade teacher, and Mathews replaces Gina Miller as elementary principal.

On last Wednesday, a television tower at the farm home of John and Janice Everett was struck by lightning in the early morning hours. Their business-band radio had literally blown up. Also, three television sets, a booster, a cordless telephone and a VCR were damaged. Other items that don't work are the dishwasher and dryer.


Old-Fashioned Saturday Night pictures: Mary Boguard of Haxtun won Daily Driver with her 1966 Ford Mustang. Exhausted from the day, Shelby Knode couldn't take anymore of the excitement at Old-Fashioned Saturday Night and fell asleep. A 1948 Harley Davidson owned by Lloyd Ensminger won the motorcycle division.

Gettin' dirty at the PC Fair: Molly Brown slips in the mud and spills water out of her bucket during a relay contest at the Phillips County Fair. The relay, made up of various farming jobs, too place during family fun activities in front of the grand stands following the BBQ on Friday.


Smiles and giggles are what 8-year-old Luke Sprague greets his visitors with less than a week after losing the lower portion of his left leg in an auger accident on his family's farm.
