At a dinner given by Mr. and Mrs. Verne Cronquist in Longmont on Friday evening, July 22, Herbert Meakins Jr. and Miss Lorene Tyler, the honored guests, announced that they were to be married the following day.

Friends here have received an announcement of the marriage of Miss Louise Lucille Newman, teacher in the Haxtun High School and William F. Greenlee Jr. The wedding took place last Sunday at Imperial, Neb.

Miss Edith Damrow and John Lundberg of McCook, Neb., recently announced their marriage, which took place May 25, at Oberlin, Kan. Also married in the double wedding ceremony following the college prom at McCook were Miss Margaret McKee and Robert Basch, also of McCook.

Hospital news: Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Olson are the parents of a baby daughter born July 31 and named Nancy Corrinne. A baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Muths of Sedgwick. She has been named Jo Dell.

Fleming News - Dean Davis received his commission as second lieutenant in the US Air Force at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., on Aug. 1.

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. Carl Eckman and two older children left Friday morning for California and other points of interest in the west.

Aug. 3, 1978

Larry Dye of Denver has been hired to fill the secondary mathematics vacancy at Haxtun High School. Other new staff members are Jim Stansbury, high school science and head varsity basketball coach; Jim Nickles, Title I, special education, head varsity wrestling and assistant track coach; John Starkebaum, head varsity football coach.

Haxtun Locker Plant's team won the championship trophy at last weekend's women's softball tournament. Team members pictured: Diane Fryrear, Cathy Starkebaum, Kari Starkebaum, Judy Ruch, Pat Meakins, Kristie Firme, Julie Munday, Laurie Claymon, Laurie Wilson, Vickie Fuesz and Barb Ensminger.

Aug. 4, 1993

County commissioners expect to receive a cease and desist order within the week on the incinerator at the county landfill from the State Department of Health. "We are not polluting out there," Jay Dean Krueger said. "The problem is, they can't monitor it, so they are shutting us down." Keith Sharpe, District Three Commissioner, noted that the incinerator actually cuts down on health risks to the public because it has eliminated the rat problem along with blowing trash.

Troy Raper was recently hired by the Haxtun School District as K-12 music instructor, replacing both Bob Johnson and Rebecca Roberts. Johnson resigned to pursue a career in hotel/motel management. Rebecca will teach multi-categorical students.

Clarissa Lousberg, a junior at Fleming High School, has been named an A-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.

Three mosquito pools recently trapped in Morgan County have tested positive for West Nile virus. The pools, which were collected in mid-July in Fort Morgan, confirm what health officials already assume, that the virus is still active.
