Everything is in readiness for the opening of the Phillips County Fair for Aug. 22, 23 and 24. The entertainment includes novelty races, horse races, motorcycle races, band concerts, free acts, attractions, dances and baseball games. The rates for grandstand, bleachers and quarter stretch are 10 and 35 cents in the afternoon and five and 10 cents in the evening.

Assurance was given that night football games will be held at Haxtun this fall, following action of the local Commercial Club and town officials this week. Marion G. Talcott, high school principal, said that arrangements would be completed in the next few days to light the football field north of the school building with floodlights. By playing at night, a greater number of spectators can attend the games.

Aug. 19, 1953

Cpl. Virgil L. Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Schaefer, is returning to the United States after serving in Korea with the 45th Infantry Division since June 1952.


The Haxtun community was well represented at the Phillips County Fair Tuesday. In the fat beef division, Donna Fryrear's Hereford steer was named grand champion and the medium Shorthorn shown by Joyce Fryrear was named reserve champion. In the Angus division, Bill Fryrear won both the champion and reserve champion. He was also named champion showman of the fair.

Miss Georgia Hradecky, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. George Hradecky of Fleming, and Norbert Bornhoft, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bornhoft, also have Fleming, were united in marriage Wednesday morning, Aug. 12, in the Saint Peter's Church, with Rev. James Halloran performing the double ring wedding ceremony.

Aug. 17, 1978

Seventy-nine of the top animals at the Phillips County Fair were sold at the 4-H consignment auction held Wednesday, Aug. 2. David Kain's grand champion market lamb, weighing 100 pounds, was sold for $2.20 a pound to Haxtun Flying Service. Others: grand champion market hog, Roger Koberstein, $2 a pound for 220 pounds, Reimer-Smith Elevator; Grand champion steer, Larry Stroh, $1.25 a pound for 1,265 pounds, Dutton Implement; Kathy Oliver, grand champion lightweight steer, 95 cents a pound for 995 pounds, Smythes and Reimer-Smith.

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. Evan Michael are enjoying a visit from Mrs. Michael's mother and brother, Mrs. Skold and Wayne, and her grandparents from Oakland, Neb.


Fleming News - Rick Barkley celebrated his first birthday Sunday. His folks honored him with a dinner at their home with grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barkley, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barkley and Lindsey of Greeley. Rick's family includes his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Barkley, Wendy and Eric.

Aug. 18, 1993

A two-vehicle accident on Aug. 13 claimed the life of Fleming resident, Jeffrey Dale Grauberger, age 30.

Joel Brotherton received his bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering on May 14 at the University of Colorado.

Phyllis and Lorin Starkebaum celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 8 with a party given by their family.

New teachers at Haxtun: Richard Gerk, fourth grade; Kristi Boerner, fourth grade; Tony Harp, High school math.


New at Fleming: Joseph Nadeau, music.

The F&H Golf Club recently recognized four of the golf course's founders during a tournament earlier this month. Founders pictured, Dallas Hopkins, Harold McConnell and Tom Bornhoft were presented with a plaque for their years of service at F&H on Saturday, Aug. 10 during the 2013 Founders Golf Tournament. Verl Timm was also recognized for his contribution, but is not pictured.

The golf course started in 1972 as a sand green course with $1 green fees for nine holes. A yearly membership per family was $25. The first year there were 40 family members.
