Aug. 31, 1938

Miss Laurel Brooks and Dale Critchlow, popular young people of Haxtun, were married in Sterling Wednesday afternoon of this week. The ceremony was performed at four o'clock at the Methodist parsonage by the raft. Howard L. Elston. Attendance were miss Florence Johnson and Dean Garrett.

Daily News - Mr. and Mrs. Dale Kennedy are the proud parents of a baby boy born Aug. 26 at the Mooney hospital. The baby has been named Gary Maurice.

North County Line News - the Fairfield School opened Monday morning with Miss Wesley as primary teacher, Miss Early intermediate, Miss Skold,grammar room, and Mr. Wood high school. Ralph Peterson and Cecil Farrell are bus drivers.

Midway News - Shirley and Delbert Sack enrolled Monday in the Haxtun High School. Shirley enrolled as a junior and Delbert as a sophomore.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gall left Tuesday for Morrill, Neb., where Mr. Gall will resume his work as a teacher in the schools. They have made their home on the farm here during the summer.


Philorado News - Miss Evelyn Starkebaum is teaching at Paoli this year.

Bryant News - Carl Lundgren helped Bob Thompson thrash a few days last week.

70 Years Ago

Sept. 2, 1953

Pvt. Jerry Lambert, who has been visiting his relatives in Haxtun while on furlough, left on Tuesday morning to return to Camp Polk, La. He drove his car and was accompanied to camp by Willard Briggs of Holyoke, who is also stationed in Louisiana.

Two Haxtun Boy Scouts, Jim Kasparek and Richard Miller, were personally inspected by the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower at the entrance to Lowry Air Force Base. A picture of the President talking to the two boys appeared in the Aug. 26 issue of The Denver Post.


Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Anderson and children, Carol and Gerald, of Minot, N.D., arrived in Haxtun Tuesday. Rev. Anderson accepted a call to the pastorate at the Brethren Church and will deliver his first sermon there Sunday. Rev W.O. Neff, former pastor, accepted a teaching position in the Highland Center School. Mrs. Neff will teach in the kindergarten again this year.

Miss Julie Buzard of Kim and Bill Glenn were married Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Raton, N.M. Their attendants were Miss Wayman Like and Ted Roderick.

Aug. 31, 1978

The Haxtun Hospital Benefit Committee presented a check from the Fourth of July carnival to Shirley Salvador, Director of Nurses. Pictured with Shirley: Sandy Lambert, Pat Hadeen, Trilla Bornhoft, Laurine Koellner and Sherrie Lundgren. The carnival raised $1,262 .07.


Despite assurances that the prospect for the project becoming a reality is a "one in one million chance," northeastern Colorado is apparently one of six sites being considered for a mobile missile complex by the United States Air Force.

Three new teachers, including a Haxtun graduate, have begun their teaching duties at Haxtun High School with the start of classes this Friday. Jim Stansbury, Larry Dye and Jim Nickles join 29 other teachers in the school system. Stansbury graduated from Haxtun.

Joan Stieb of Haxtun was officially hired Monday night at a special meeting by the Haxtun Board of Trustees to fill the position of town treasurer/assistant clerk, and will begin duties on Sept. 5.


Katharine Hinde and Sharon Hinde are the new managers at the Country Kitchen in Haxtun. A grand opening was held Aug. 21.

Sept. 1, 1993

Five members of Haxtun's Invaders softball team from the early 1980s formed the core for the Senators men's fast-pitch team for the National ASA "C" Tournament in Minot, N.D. They are Correy Lick, Jim Orth, Don Nolan, Scott Kirkwood and Doug Short.

Nurse Practitioner Bonnie Hablutzel welcomed visitors on Sunday to the grand opening of the Crook Medical Clinic. The Haxtun Hospital District opened the clinic with funds from a $300,000 Rural Transition Trant, which they will receive over the next two years.


Jeri I. Anderson of Haxtun was recently announced to the University of Northern Colorado's Dean's List of Distinction.

Rachel and Thomas Cross are excited to begin their work at Haxtun United Methodist Church. They arrived in Haxtun on July 1 from Salt Lake City, Utah, where he had been an associate pastor at Christ United Methodist Church for five years.

Lisa Chintala took over as head volleyball coach at Fleming when the Lady Wildcats began practice earlier this year.

It's official. Voters within the Haxtun School District will decide on constructing a new middle school wing by means of a ballot question during elections in November. The Board of Education voted on official ballot language during a meeting last week.

There will be new faces around the Fleming Board of Education table come December. Board members, Paula Frantz and Regina Boerner are reaching the end of their current four-year term and with limit restrictions, will not be able to run for a third stint on the Board.
